Netflix has been picking up the streaming rights to a lot of TV shows recently. The next licensed show expected to be added to the streaming platform soon is Young Sheldon. It’s been reported that the first five seasons will be released on Netflix on Nov. 24, 2023, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Young Sheldon is a coming-of-age television sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro. It’s considered a spin-off prequel series to the popular romantic comedy sitcom The Big Bang Theory. The first season began airing on CBS in September 2017, and we’ve seen five more seasons come out over the years.

Set in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Young Sheldon follows the life of child genius Sheldon Cooper as he grows up with his family in East Texas. If you watched The Big Bang Theory, you’d already know who Sheldon is. He was one of the main characters in the show.

Sadly, it was announced that the popular CBS show would be coming to an end with its upcoming seventh season, which is scheduled to start airing on CBS on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024. But why exactly is the series coming to an end? Here’s what we know.

Honestly, it’s not surprising that the show will be ending with its seventh season because it has finally reached the end of its previous three-season renewal that was granted back in March 2021. The main reason why the show won’t be coming back for an eighth season is because Sheldon’s origin story will have reached its end with the seventh season. In order for the show to remain true to The Big Bang Theory‘s already established canon, the prequel has to come to an end.

Here’s what the president of CBS Entertainment, Amy Reisenbach, had to say about the show ending with its seventh season via Deadline:

"“As a prequel to one of the biggest comedies, Young Sheldon proved lightning can strike twice. It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start. We extend a sincere thank you to executive producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Steve Holland and the entire writing and producing teams for six wonderful seasons. We look forward to seeing their final season unfold and giving it a proper sendoff with the best episodes yet for their fans to enjoy.”"

Executive producers Steve Holland, Steve Molaro, and Chuck Lorre also had something to say about the show coming to an end. Here’s what they said below.

"“Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience. We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of the Coopers these past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we’re excited to share this final season with you.”"

Fortunately, we haven’t seen the last of The Big Bang Theory world though. A new Big Bang Theory spinoff is currently in development at Max, formerly HBO Max, with Lorre heading it.

Could Young Sheldon season 7 come to Netflix?

Yes, it’s definitely possible. However, it’ll have to finish airing on CBS first, and Netflix will have to acquire the streaming rights. The sixth season could land on Netflix in the future as well, but again it all comes down to the streamer securing the rights to stream from Warner Bros. Television. Of course, you can count on us to let you know if this ever happens.

Young Sheldon seasons 1-5 are expected to come to Netflix on Nov. 24.
