Rob Lowe returned to Netflix in 2023, starring alongside his son John Owen Lowe in the comedy series Unstable, which Netflix renewed for season 2. The star previously headlined the Netflix original movies Holiday in the Wild and Dog Gone. Now, the 9-1-1: Lone Star actor shares the screen with his real-life son in Unstable, and now we know when they’ll be back!

In May 2024, Netflix officially announced that Unstable season 2 will make its premiere on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024. Finally, it's back this summer! The streamer also released a first look clip of the eight-episode season, featuring Fred Armisen's character helping Ellis prepare for prison (because of course!) as well as a handful of new photos revealing the show's new guest stars Lamorne Morris and Iris Apatow. Watch the teaser below!

After the show’s premiere on March 30, 2023, Netflix hadn’t announced any updates on a follow-up season, though by looking at the show’s performance, you wouldn’t expect a second season to necessarily be a given. Thankfully, the odds worked in Unstable’s favor and the comedy series will return in the wake of the dual Hollywood labor strikes that delayed various projects.

In the comedy series, Lowe stars as biotech genius Ellis Dragon, who’s taken himself down quite the rough patch. However, his estranged son Jackson (John Owen Lowe) steps in to help save his father’s company, and the pair might actually save their fractured relationship along the way. Unstable brings the Lowe father-and-son duo on-screen together again after appearing in titles like The Grinder, The Lowe Files, and Holiday in the Wild.

Filming wrapped in January 2024

On Jan. 28, John Owen Lowe shared a video on Instagram announcing that filming on the second season of Unstable had wrapped. In his caption, Lowe wrote, "That's a wrap on Season 2 of Unstable!! See you guys on Netflix later [this] year!" Along with his celebration of the end of filming, Lowe confirmed that the second season would be released sometime later on in 2024.

Lamorne Morris and Iris Apatow join the cast

New Girl alum Lamorne Morris and The Bubble star Iris Apatow were announced as season 2 guest stars in December 2023. Lamorne, who has also starred in Woke and Fargo, will recur in the second season as Peter. He's full of charisma as a biotech start-up founder, but he also finds a way to continue to amp up the rivalry between Ellis and Jackson. No doubt, Morris will be just as funny in this role as he was as Winston.

Apatow, who audiences will remember from her child star roles in her dad Judd Apatow's movies Knocked Up and This Is 40, will also have a recurring role in the season as Georgia. She's Anna's former stepdaughter and a new intern at Dragon. Because she doesn't really want to have this job, Georgia finds other ways to entertain herself to make it worth her time.

Beyond the Rob and John Owen Lowe, the season 2 main cast includes:

  • Sian Clifford as Anna
  • Aaron Branch as Malcolm
  • Rachel Marsh as Luna
  • Emma Ferreira as Ruby

Below is our previous report on the season 2 renewal.

Unstable season 2 officially happening on Netflix

On Nov. 16, Netflix finally announced the renewal for Unstable season 2. According to Variety, original co-creator and showrunner Victor Fresco left the series and has been replaced with new showrunner and executive producer Andrew Gurland. The Variety report also revealed that the second season began filming in Los Angeles in the “coming weeks" following the announcement.

A day prior to the announcement of Unstable’s renewal, word arrived that Lowe’s other television series, Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star, had been pushed to the fall 2024 season. Rather than producing a total of 18 episodes for its fifth season, which would have been split between six in midseason 2023 and 12 in fall 2024, the network and studio opted to scrap the split plan due to the length of the strikes. Clearly, Lowe seems to be filming Unstable before Lone Star.

Back on May 4, 2023, Deadline shared an update on Unstable season 2, revealing that though Netflix hadn’t officially renewed the series, the comedy’s second season was in production in Hollywood. In the wake of the Writers Guild strike, it was ultimately shutdown.

According to Deadline, production on season 2 began back in March and six scripts had been written for the season that was expected to contain eight episodes. While filming would have kicked off later in spring, staff was informed that season 2 was suspended and they were laid off, per Deadline’s sources.

In April 2022, Netflix picked up Unstable straight to series based on the Rob and John Owen Lowe’s social media relationship. The pair are executive producers on the series, with Santa Clarita Diet creator Victor Fresco as showrunner.

Netflix hasn’t had much luck with finding a new original comedy series to soar to the heights of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Grace and Frankie, and BoJack Horseman (among others). But the streamer continued to try with Unstable and the forthcoming Girls5eva season 3.
