They’re going to be famous 5eva, thanks in part to Netflix! The underrated comedy series Girls5eva will be flying away from its previous home of Peacock for a move to Netflix, and devoted fans of the hilarious laugher want to know everything about Girls5eva season 3. Finally, the streamer has announced that the new season, as well as seasons 1 and 2, will release in March 2024.

From the hilarious mind of 30 Rock creator Tina Fey and her trusted team, Girls5eva centers on a ’90s girl group that comes back into the cultural consciousness thanks to a hit song sampling one of theirs. Suddenly, they reunite in an attempt to make a comeback, but it’s not always smooth sailing.

What’s the latest on season 3? When do seasons 1 and 2 drop on Netflix? Who will be in the next season? We’re sharing what we know now, and we’ll update this post as Netflix reveals more details and information about Girls5eva season 3. The latest update was made on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024.

All Girls5eva seasons coming to Netflix in March 2024

After being quietly canceled after airing two seasons on Peacock, Girls5eva was saved for a third season by Netflix. Girls5eva season 3 will be exclusive to Netflix and now has a release date for Thursday, March 14, 2024. On this day, the first and second seasons will also begin streaming on Netflix, making for a complete binge for new viewers.

While the third season only consists of six episodes, the first two seasons have eight episodes each. In total, 22 episodes will arrive on Netflix on March 14. Ironically, that would be a full season for a regular broadcast comedy, but those 22 episodes make up three seasons of the cult favorite streaming sitcom.

The eight-episode first season of Girls5eva dropped all at once on May 6, 2021, the second season, which was also eight episodes, was released a bit differently. The first three episodes premiered on May 5, 2022, with the remaining five being released weekly until June 9. Season 3 follows suit with season 2 and will drop all at once, staying true to the Netflix binge model.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedy series struggled to grab hold of a strong audience during its time on Peacock, even though it had been a critical and cult favorite from the jump. Netflix previously saved fellow Tina Fey-produced quirky comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt from NBC, making the move all the more fated.

When Netflix saved the series, executive producers Meredith Scardino, Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond, and Robert Carlock shared a statement expressing their excitement for the show getting a second chance with the Netflix audience:

"Our deepest thanks to Peacock for bringing Girls5eva to life and supporting us creatively at every turn since the first pitch. And we are endlessly grateful to our partners at NBCU for their boundless commitment. Today, we are thrilled to announce that our reunited girl group will be re-reunited at Netflix. We are so thankful to everyone at the streamer who fell in love with our music-filled comedy. We cannot wait to introduce Dawn, Wickie, Summer and Gloria to the global Netflix audience. Well, not fully introduce, if you look closely, Girls5eva can be seen in the background of the Woodstock ’99 documentary setting a porta potty on fire."

Season 3 wrapped filming in May 2023

Filming officially wrapped on the highly anticipated new season of Girls5eva in early May 2023, as announced with an Instagram post from Busy Philipps. The actress shared a photo of the cast and crew gathered together on the soundstage and celebrating filming’s wrap. Paula Pell also confirmed that the season wrapped filming prior to the writer's strike.

The six episodes finished filming in just over a month’s time, and the post-production process began shortly after. However, the actor's strike caused a delay in the cast being able to finish their post-production work on the season. As of December 2023, Philipps has been posting updates on her Instagram story indicating that the cast is still recording music for the new episodes.

Before cameras started rolling on season 3 of the comedy series, Philipps filmed her role as Mrs. George in the Mean Girls the Musical movie, which is also co-written and produced by Tina Fey. Given Philipps has a supporting role, she seemingly wrapped her scenes and began filming Girls5eva.

On Tuesday, March 21, Philipps shared a photo on her Instagram confirming that Girls5eva season 3 had started filming, and on Feb. 8, 2023, Paula Pell appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and talked about the show. When Meyers mentioned that the cast was “about to start” shooting Girls 5eva season 3, Pell noted that filming would begin “in a few weeks.”

Who's in the season 3 cast?

Along with the announcement of the season 3 renewal, Netflix confirmed that all four of the main cast members would be back to reprise their roles as the titular girl group.

Here’s the main cast members who will be back for Girls5eva season 3:

  • Sara Bareilles as Dawn
  • Busy Philipps as Summer
  • Paula Pell as Gloria
  • Renée Elise Goldsberry as Wickie

Over the course of it’s first two seasons, Girls5eva welcomed a number of recognizable guest stars. Dean Winters plays Dawn’s brother, Amy Sedaris and Neil Flynn play Summer’s parents, Vanessa Williams plays a prospective manager, Ashley Park plays the late fifth group member Ashley, and Andrew Rannells plays Summer’s husband Kev. Some of these guest stars could return in the third season.

Girls5eva season 2 ending explained

By the end of the second season, Girls5eva has chipped away at making their comeback and has the prospect of a tour on their hands. However, all four of the members of the group have reasons holding them back from embarking on such a demanding career opportunity.

Dawn learns that she’s pregnant, Gloria and Wickie worry about their relationships, and Summer struggles with leaving Stevia with Kev. But in spite each of their concerns, they opt to seize the moment and leave on a tour of their own to show the world what they’ve got.

What’s next in season 3?

As Pell shared in her interview with Seth Meyers, Girls5eva season 3 will see the girl group off on tour, and it sounds like it’s going to be a bit of hot mess — or “janky,” as Pell put it. The girls will surely have some unexpected (and expected) setbacks while hitting the road for tour for the first time in years. But they do have a hit song and their talent to back them up.

The season could begin with a time jump instead of following the tour in succession, or we could pick up with the tour from where we left off in season 2. Maybe they will actually find success on the road, but it’s more likely that the tour will pose new hurdles for the group. Also, Dawn will be giving birth to her second child in season 3, and we’re expecting new developments for Summer, Gloria, and Wickie’s respective personal lives.

Here's the official season 3 synopsis via Netflix:

"The members of the late ‘90s girl-group Girls5eva – Dawn, Wickie, Summer, and Gloria – have reunited and recorded a new album, Returnity, so it’s time for the next logical step: a comeback tour. With no plan, tour manager, or venues secured, the ladies pile into a van and hit the great unknown, doing their damnedest to promote their album and get back on top. In the process, Girls5eva will grapple with life on the road, see their relationships tested, play a billionaire’s birthday party, sow their oats, confront parents they believe held them back, cross paths with the biggest pop star on the planet, and question if they really want “the big time” again. Will Girls5eva fast-track their comeback and sell their tour documentary in the process? Or will the road destroy them?"

Is Girls5eva leaving Peacock?

If you’re a Peacock subscriber who loves Girls5eva, the first two seasons of the series will not be removed from the streaming service.
