We have some amazing news to share about Wednesday season 2! We have a major production update. We have a major story update. We have several cast updates to share, too, along with a video. It's all good in the Addams Family universe on Netflix.

Well, not all good news, actually, but we'll get to that in a minute!

We know fans have been waiting a long time to watch the new season. The first season of Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega hit Netflix on Nov. 23, 2022. Finally, after literally a year of waiting, the cast and crew just started filming Wednesday season 2 in Ireland in the spring of 2024. Netflix revealed season 2 filming started on May 7, 2024, but it looks like cameras were rolling a bit sooner.

Production on season 2 was expected to last from the spring of 2024 through at least August, according to production listings. However, filming remains ongoing in November 2024.

While on the red carpet for the 75th Annual Primetime Emmys, Ortega was asked about season 2, and she said that "everything's bigger," so expect production to take a while!

"There’s really, really good one-liners, and I think everything’s bigger, it’s a lot more action-packed. Each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice. "

It means that we won't see Wednesday season 2 on Netflix until 2025, which has already been confirmed.

Wednesday season 2 is coming to Netflix in 2025

That's right; Wednesday season 2 will land on Netflix sometime in 2025. We don't have the release window for the season yet, but I'm guessing it'll be spring or summer if production truly ends in August 2024. If production lasts much later in the year, it'll probably be a later summer or early fall release depending on what Netflix does with Stranger Things season 5, which is also expected to premiere in the summer of 2025. Obviously, with both shows in production, that's subject to change.

According to an earlier report from Variety, Netflix was prioritizing two shows coming out of the WGA strike: Wednesday and Stranger Things. This should not surprise anyone. These are the two biggest English-language Netflix shows. With Squid Game season 2 already in the works (and confirmed for a late 2024 release), Wednesday season 2 and Stranger Things season 5 officially ramping up to film is a huge win for Netflix.

Variety claimed “writing scripts for and filming the second season of Wednesday” is “top of mind” for the streamer. That’s good news, considering how long fans have already waited for season 2 and will be waiting. Not all Netflix shows are going to be that lucky to be the priority coming out of the writers’ and actors’ strikes.

We know fans want to see Wednesday season 2 soon, but hold on a bit longer. We'll share more about the Wednesday season 2 release when we find out.

  • Lady Gaga

Netflix confirmed the cast in a new video.

On Nov. 14, some exciting casting news was revealed. Oscar-winning pop star Lady Gaga joined the cast of season 2 in what Variety describes as a cameo appearance. As of the reveal of Gaga's casting, details on who she's playing weren't available. The pop star's 2011 song "Blood Mary" went viral after the release of season 1, so it's super fitting that she's entering the world of Wednesday onscreen, too.

There are a few Wednesday characters who won’t be back for season 2. It’s unclear if Gwendoline Christie will be back given what happened to her character, Principal Weems. Christina Ricci, who played Laurel Gates/Marilyn Thornhill, is not expected to be back for season 2.

As for the new characters, Christopher Lloyd, who played Uncle Fester in the movies, is joining the cast for season 2, along with Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Owen Painter, Noah Taylor, Evie Templeton, Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton, Heather Matarazzo, Haley Joel Osment, Joonas Suotamowill, and Frances O'Connor.

Trigger Warning: Sexual Assault

Percy Haynes White was cut from the season 2 cast after allegations of sexual assault surfaced following season 1. White, who plays Xavier on Wednesday, was in the headlines in 2023 after being accused of sexual assault. White, 21, was called out by the allegations in January, when a Twitter user said they were assaulted at a party the actor was hosting in Toronto, along with other women.

There was a rumor that Lady Gaga could even be involved with season 2, with Ortega even saying Netflix would love that if it were true, but it's unclear if that's going to happen as nothing has been said since the rumor started back in January 2023.

Season 1 ending

At the end of the first season of Wednesday, Wednesday discovered that Tyler was actually the Hyde monster, and he was being controlled by Ms. Thornhill, also known as Laurel Gates, who was taking revenge on Nevermore for being responsible for the deaths of her family members. But, it’s so much deeper than that. There’s even more history between the Addams fam and the Crackstones, which is why Laurel Gates brings back Joseph Crackstone from the dead to destroy Nevermore and everyone there.

Thankfully, Wednesday, Enid (who finally wolfs out!), and the gang solve the mystery, stop Crackstone, Tyler, and Laurel, and save the day, but there are some casualties, including the fan-favorite Principal Weems.

What can we expect from season 2?

For a minute, it looked like Wednesday season 2 wasn’t necessarily going to happen in the season 1 finale. Most of the major storylines had been wrapped up. Tyler had escaped, yes, but Laurel was dead and Crackstone vanquished. Wednesday had some work to do to make up for some of the damage she caused during her investigation, but her emotional arc ended on a high note with her hug and friendship with Enid.

At the last minute, Wednesday is sent threatening text messages from a person who has been following her since she arrived at Nevermore, which seemingly sets the stage for season 2. Who is this person? Why are they threatening her?

This person’s identity and Tyler’s disappearance will likely be major focuses of season 2, but I don’t think that’s where the creative team will stop. I think there are way more surprises and Addams Family things to be discovered in season 2.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait quite a long time until we find out what’s in store in the new season. We did get a little bit of a hint of what could be on the way, according to Ortega.

Premiere title revealed

In the cast announcement video, you can see the title of the first episode of season. It's called "Here We Woe Again." It's written by series creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. Plus, Tim Burton is directing the episode!

We don't have any other episode titles for Wednesday season 2 yet, but that'll change as we get closer to the release of the new season. Stay tuned!

Jenna Ortega promises less romance and more horror for season 2

While speaking with Fallon on The Tonight Show, Ortega hinted that more horror and less romance could be on the way in season 2. Here’s what she said:

"“I think we want to up, kind of, the horror aspect a little bit and then get Wednesday out of the romantic situation and just let her be her own individual and fight her own crime.”"

After the first season of Wednesday came out, it didn’t take long for many fans to start shipping Wednesday and her roommate, Enid. The two girls didn’t see eye to eye at first but became close friends by the end of the season, and Jenna Ortega has let slip that she’s all for a romance between the characters.

During an interview with Variety, Enid actress Emma Myers was asked about a potential romance for the two characters, in which she shared: “Anything is possible in the show. We haven’t really spoken about direction at all, so I don’t really know what the game plan is for anything.”

Myers did, however, go on to share that she thinks Wednesday should be single in season 2:

"“As far as love interests go for Wednesday, I feel like at least for a second season, she needs to take her season of singleness. She just had a whole fiasco with her men, she’s got to lay it off for a little bit. I would be deterred from dating anybody if I had gone through that.”"

Many people (Ortega included) were frustrated with the fact that the show put Wednesday in a love triangle in the first season, so we’ll be curious to see what her love life is like in the second.

When Ortega shares these snippets about Wednesday season 2, we should listen because, in addition to starring as Wednesday Addams in the new season, she’s also going to be a producer on the new season, according to Elle.

Wednesday showrunners would like to make at least three or four seasons

Wednesday showrunners and producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough confirmed they have plans to make three or four seasons of the series, initially, according to Variety:

"For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully the show is successful. So you always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters."

If things go well, there’s no reason to think that Wednesday wouldn’t be renewed for season 3 and even season 4 in the future. This show is well on its way to becoming, potentially, the most-watched Netflix series of all time.

Wednesday is definitely one of the best shows on Netflix. We’ll share more information about the new season when we find out. Stay tuned!
