This just in: Golden Globe Award-winning actor Steve Buscemi has reportedly joined the highly anticipated Wednesday season 2 cast and you won't believe who he's rumored to be playing in the comedy-horror series! Also joining him as a new addition is Emmy Award-winning actress Thandiwe Newton. We shared all the juicy deets about their rumored castings below.
Wednesday is hands down one of Netflix's best original series, and everyone's patiently waiting for the second season to come out. Unfortunately, there was a major production delay due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, but those have since ended, and production on the new season is expected to commence in late April 2024 in a new location: Ireland.
An official release date for Wednesday season 2 has not been announced yet, but we can pretty much count out a 2024 release. The filmmaking process won't likely finish up in time. With a filming start date in April, we're looking at about six months of production, and then about seven to eight months of post-production before the new season lands on Netflix. This would put the second season's release somewhere between early to mid-2025. However, this is just our release prediction. Wednesday season 2 could come earlier or later than what we predicted. Once the official release date is announced, you'll be the first to know.
But we're hoping Steve Buscemi's casting in the new season is confirmed soon. Variety was the first to break the news of the well-known actor's potential casting. According to the news outlet, Buscemi will be playing the new principal of Nevermore Academy. If you recall from the season 1 finale, the former principal, Larissa Weems, dies after being injected with nightshade by Marilyn Thornhill/Laurel Gates.
While plot details for the second season are unknown at the moment, Wednesday will obviously return to Nevermore Academy for the new semester. But what we're curious to know is what her dynamic will be like with the new principal. She had sort of a mentor-mentee relationship with the former principal. Will she and the new principal have a similar dynamic? Who knows, maybe the new principal won't be a good character but instead an antagonist. We can't wait to find out!
Buscemi is a very talented actor, known for his roles in movies like Reservoir Dogs and Fargo. We can definitely see him playing the role of a principal. Fingers crossed, his rumored casting is confirmed by Netflix and/or the show's creative team. We'll come back and let you know if this happens.
On April 23, news broke that the amazingly talented actress Thandiwe Newton had joined the Wednesday season 2 cast. However, who she will be playing is unknown at the moment. According to What's on Netflix, a casting call went out in January 2024 looking for an actor to play a Theater Music Teacher in the second season. Maybe Newton could be portraying this character. Honestly, we don't really care what character she plays. We're just happy that she's been potentially cast in the second season. Once character details are revealed, we'll be sure to come back and update you.
For now, you can check out some of Newton's other work already streaming on Netflix such as the sci-fi action movie 2012 and the kid animated movie Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.
