Keri Russell finally makes her return to television after concluding her Emmy-nominated turn in the fan-favorite spy thriller The Americans in 2018. The iconic small screen (and big screen!) star headlines Netflix’s new political drama The Diplomat.

Hot off the heels of the blockbuster political thriller The Night Agent, Netflix launches right into the next potential hit series of a similar genre, and fans will want to know what the series is all about and if it’s worth adding to their watch lists.

For more details on Russell’s new starring role and whether you should check out the new Netflix series, we’re sharing the synopsis of The Diplomat and what kind of TV viewers will be particularly interested in the surefire hit series!

What is The Diplomat on Netflix about?

When it comes to her most famous small screen roles, Keri Russell has done it all. She’s been a hopeless romantic college student with big emotions and a butt-kicking Russian spy posing as an American during the Cold War. Next up, she’s a diplomat.

Take a look at the official synopsis of The Diplomat via Netflix:

"Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). From showrunner Debora Cahn (THE WEST WING, HOMELAND), THE DIPLOMAT is a high-stakes, contemporary political drama about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships, between countries and people."

As you can see, the new Netflix original series has everything you could possibly be looking for from a binge-watch. There’s political intrigue, personal life strife, and a high-stakes central plot that will have us firmly planted on the edge of our seats. And that’s not all! The official trailer for the series promises some lighter moments of natural humor from Russell’s Kate.

Is The Diplomat worth watching?

Less than a month after the release of Netflix’s latest massive hit series The Night Agent, fans of the overnight success have been searching for more shows to binge-watch while they wait for season 2. Thankfully, The Diplomat arrives at the perfect time.

While Russell’s series might not be as action-packed as The Night Agent, it’s still in a similar vein and will be an especially worthwhile watch for those who enjoyed the political aspects of the aforementioned hit. What’s more, Keri Russell never disappoints when it comes to her television shows.

Early reviews of the series praise her performance, calling it “the meaty post-Americans role she deserves” and dubbing the series as a whole “smart and diverting.” Although Variety says the show “isn’t the second coming of The Americans,” it’s still worth the watch for fans of the stellar lead actress and the genre as a whole. The Diplomat is sure to be one of the year’s best new Netflix shows.
