The Watcher was one of the most popular Netflix shows of 2022. The true crime/thriller genre consistently performs on Netflix, so it’s no surprise The Watcher was popular. Now, fans are wondering what’s up with The Watcher season 2. We’ve shared everything we know so far about the new season below.

The first season of the Netflix original series premiered on Oct. 13, 2022. Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan created the series. The Watcher stars Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Isabel Gravitt, Luke David Blumm, Jennifer Coolidge, Margo Martindale, Richard Kind, Mia Farrow, Christopher McDonald, Noma Dumezweni, Joe Mantello, and Henry Hunter Hall.

We’ll continue to share updates about The Watcher season 2 as we find out. The latest update was on Monday, April 10, 2023.

The Watcher season 2 is happening

While there were many questions about if and how The Watcher season 2 would happen, it is!

Netflix renewed the series for season 2 in November 2022, one month after the series premiered. Most Netflix shows have to wait much longer for a renewal (unless it’s The Night Agent!). Wednesday fans had to wait almost three months for the series to get renewed. Luckily for The Watcher fans, that didn’t happen with season 2 and the series scored a quick renewal.

At the same time, Netflix also renewed Monster, another Murphy-led series, for a second season.

Who’s in The Watcher season 2 cast?

Unfortunately, there’s no one officially in The Watcher season 2 cast right now, and that’s because we don’t know the direction Murphy, Brennan, and Netflix are going to take the series.

There are a few different directions this story could go. One brings back the original cast, while the other doesn’t. Let’s talk about those.

If Netflix wants to run it back and continue the story of the Brannock family, the house at 657 Boulevard, and their neighbors, they should bring everyone, or most of the main cast, from the first season back into the mix. That would include Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Isabel Gravitt, Luke David Blumm, Margo Martindale, potentially Jennifer Coolidge, and the rest of the cast.

What’s next for The Watcher season 2?

If they don’t want to continue this story, there’s a good chance we could see The Watcher season 2 focus on a different haunted stalker house. Is this the only one? Probably not, right? That would mean the series would focus on new characters, which means we’re getting a full new cast.

They could also continue the story at 657 Boulevard with a new family in the future or they could take a spin to the past and tell the origin story of 657. Nothing has been taken off the table, publicly, yet.

If I were to guess, I’d say that we’re probably going to get a whole new story in The Watcher season 2.

Interestingly, Coolidge revealed in December that she has not been asked back for season 2 yet. The rest of the cast, to my knowledge, hasn’t spoken publicly about being included in season 2, which is interesting, as well.

The Watcher season 1 ending, explained

At the end of The Watcher season 1, the Brannock family leaves the house at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey. They move back into New York City after selling the house at a loss. Karen, the realtor, moves in, and she starts her own renovations before getting scared straight and fleeing the house in the final scene.

We don’t find out who exactly the Watcher is, but it appears to be a collection of neighbors and everyone involved with the home in the past. It’s unclear what this means for the future of the series or if this story will be continued, as discussed above.

Does The Watcher season 2 have a release date yet?

Unfortunately, Netflix has not announced the release date for The Watcher season 2 yet. And even more unfortunately, we’re not expecting to see the new season anytime soon for a few reasons.

First of all, this series was originally planned as a limited series, which likely means one season, on Netflix. Instead, Netflix quickly renewed The Watcher for season 2. I’m assuming that’s when the ball started getting rolling on season 2 or just before that. The development process can take a long time.

On top of that, it’s been six months since the season premiered and five months since the renewal, and we don’t have any news about the cast, plot, or filming. That’s not a good sign for those hoping to see the new season soon.

Normally, we’re about a year away from the release date of a Netflix show when production starts. There’s obviously some variance, but generally speaking, we have to wait about 12 months until Netflix releases the season. If production starts on The Watcher season 2 soon, the earliest we’d see the season is in the spring of 2024.

Release Prediction: Fall 2024

And, remember, we haven’t heard anything yet, so it’s probably not starting filming anytime soon.

For now, we’re expecting a release in the fall of 2024. Netflix will likely announce more information about The Watcher season 2 or give fans an update at Geeked Week in June, Comic-Con in July or October, or TUDUM (Netflix’s fan even) in September.

That’s all we know about The Watcher season 2 so far! Stay tuned for more information about the series. The Watcher is on the list of the best shows on Netflix right now.
