As excited as we all are for Wednesday season 2, we've still got a long road ahead of us before the sophomore season debuts on the streaming service. It's looking like the show won't return until 2025 at the earliest. However, we still have plenty of updates to share about season 2 to get fans excited for what's to come.

Now that the strikes have been resolved, series and films have gotten back into production and Deadline reports that the hit Netflix series looks all but set to start filming in late April 2024 in a new locale. Production will move from Romania to Ireland, per the outlet.

According to an earlier report from Variety, Netflix was prioritizing two shows coming out of the WGA strike: Wednesday and Stranger Things. This should not surprise anyone. These are the two biggest English-language Netflix shows. With Squid Game season 2 already in the works (and confirmed for a late 2024 release), Wednesday season 2 and Stranger Things season 5 officially ramping up to film is a huge win for Netflix.

Variety claimed “writing scripts for and filming the second season of Wednesday” is “top of mind” for the streamer. That’s good news, considering how long fans have already waited for season 2 and will be waiting. Not all Netflix shows are going to be that lucky to be the priority coming out of the writers’ and actors’ strikes.

After renewing Wednesday for season 2 in January 2023, Netflix has not shared many updates regarding the second season. All the major updates have come from the cast, crew, and creative teams, including Jenna Ortega, Tim Burton, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and more. There are a lot of familiar faces also returning in the new season. We also know Jenna Ortega is returning as Wednesday Addams in season 2 and will now have a producer role on the series.

We’ll update this story as Netflix shares more information about Wednesday season 2. The latest update was made on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

Wednesday season 2 has not started filming yet

Wednesday season 2 hasn't gone into production yet, but as mentioned above, it should start filming sometime this spring, likely in April. During the 75th Primetime Emmys, star Jenna Ortega teased what fans can expect from season 2, revealing that the scripts have been written (or at least started).

"There’s really, really good one-liners, and I think everything’s bigger, it’s a lot more action-packed. Each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice."

Jenna Ortega

Prior to this exciting post-strikes development, we had a few updates that suggested production could have started in the fall of 2023 if the strikes came to an end sooner. Catherine Zeta-Jones revealed this summer that season 2 was eyeing a fall start to production. Obviously, that never came to fruition since the WGA strike lasted until September and the SAG-AFTRA strike lasted until November.

Ortega’s availability could be another factor added to the pressure of season 2’s production schedule, though we just got a report that says she will not appear in Scream 7. Rumors have begun swirling that the horror movie sequel has been eyeing a filming start date in early spring, potentially March 2024. Ortega starred in the fifth and sixth editions of the franchise as Tara Carpenter.

According to Deadline, the actress will not reprise her role in Scream 7 because of her filming schedule for Wednesday. We previously heard rumors that suggested Ortega’s role in Scream 7 could be reduced in order for her to film Wednesday, though we know now she won’t return at all.

According to reports, the cast and crew of Wednesday started production on the first season in the fall of 2021 and wrapped in the spring of 2022 in Romania. The season was released about seven to eight months after production ended, so that was basically the timeline we were looking at for Wednesday season 2. We’ll know more about the production timeline once it begins.

Tim Burton is returning for season 2

In September 2023, Tim Burton, who directed the first four episodes of the first season of Wednesday, confirmed he would return in some capacity for Wednesday season 2 in an interview with BFI.

"“I mentally put stuff on hold until all the strikes are over. I can edit and do things I can do, but until the veil is lifted, then things get back into it. But yeah, I’ll be involved in some [way]. I’m not quite sure, because everything has stopped at the moment.”"

Season 2 cast

Several cast members and creators have confirmed many of the returnees for the new season of the series. We shared who is expected to be back for season 2:

  • Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams
  • Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
  • Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin
  • Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
  • Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
  • Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
  • Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester
  • Gwendoline Christie as Principal Larissa Weems
  • Jamie McShane as Sheriff Galpin
  • Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay

There are a few Wednesday characters who won’t be back for season 2. It’s unclear if Gwendoline Christie will be back given what happened to her character, Principal Weems. Christina Ricci, who played Laurel Gates/Marilyn Thornhill, is not expected to be back for season 2.

There was a rumor that Lady Gaga could even be involved with season 2, with Ortega even saying Netflix would love that if it were true, but it's unclear if that's going to happen as nothing has been said since the rumor started back in January 2023.

It also appears that there are some conversations to get Christopher Lloyd involved for season 2. Lloyd originally played Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. Here’s what Lloyd told Yahoo! Entertainment:

"“I’ve heard rumors trickling down that I might be coming on. I’m not sure how, but I think Ortega is wonderful.”"

As for potential new castings in Wednesday season 2, co-showrunner Miles Millar had already teased prior to the renewal that additional seasons could see other members of the Addams Family appear. While speaking to TV Line, he said that they “felt like we just touched the surface with those characters” in the first season. And while Wednesday will, of course, be the focus in season 2 again, we can expect the family members to have a significant role as well.

Other memorable Addams Family characters we could potentially see in season 2 include Cousin Itt, Grandmama, Pubert Addams, Debbie Jellinsky, and more. We can’t wait to see who will be joining the second installment!

Emma Meyers, Hunter Doohan, and Joy Sunday read off fan theories during TUDUM 2023. At the end of the video, they confirmed a theory that a new member of the Addams Family will be in season 2!

Is Percy Hynes White in Wednesday season 2?

Trigger Warning: Sexual Assault

Actor Percy Hynes White, who plays Xavier on Wednesday, was in the headlines in 2023 after being accused of sexual assault. White, 21, was called out by the allegations in January, when a Twitter user said they were assaulted at a party the actor was hosting in Toronto, along with other women. In response to the claims, White provided a statement months later in June via his Instagram Story:

"“The rumors are false. I can’t accept the portrayal of me as someone bigoted, or criminally negligent of people’s safety. These are the kind of baseless, harmful claims that can create mistrust toward victims. It’s very distressing to know that this misinformation has upset people. I’m really thankful for everyone who’s stood by me and helped share the facts. Harassment of my family, friends and coworkers needs to stop please. Thank you for taking the time to read this.”"

Because of this, Wednesday fans are wondering whether or not White will be fired from the Netflix series. At this time, no news from the streaming service regarding his fate on the series has been revealed, so we’ll have to wait and see when the official cast list is shared by the streaming service.

That said, the Daily Mail did just run a report on September 4, 2023 claiming White has been “written out” of the show due to the allegations. They cite “industry insiders” as their source, but this has not been confirmed or denied by Netflix.

Wednesday season 1 ending

At the end of the first season of Wednesday, Wednesday discovered that Tyler was actually the Hyde monster, and he was being controlled by Ms. Thornhill, also known as Laurel Gates, who was taking revenge on Nevermore for being responsible for the deaths of her family members. But, it’s so much deeper than that. There’s even more history between the Addams fam and the Crackstones, which is why Laurel Gates brings back Joseph Crackstone from the dead to destroy Nevermore and everyone there.

Thankfully, Wednesday, Enid (who finally wolfs out!), and the gang solve the mystery, stop Crackstone, Tyler, and Laurel, and save the day, but there are some casualties, including the fan-favorite Principal Weems.

What can we expect from season 2?

For a minute, it looked like Wednesday season 2 wasn’t necessarily going to happen in the season 1 finale. Most of the major storylines had been wrapped up. Tyler had escaped, yes, but Laurel was dead and Crackstone vanquished. Wednesday had some work to do to make up for some of the damage she caused during her investigation, but her emotional arc ended on a high note with her hug and friendship with Enid.

At the last minute, Wednesday is sent threatening text messages from a person who has been following her since she arrived at Nevermore, which seemingly sets the stage for season 2. Who is this person? Why are they threatening her?

This person’s identity and Tyler’s disappearance will likely be major focuses of season 2, but I don’t think that’s where the creative team will stop. I think there are way more surprises and Addams Family things to be discovered in season 2.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait quite a long time until we find out what’s in store in the new season. We did get a little bit of a hint of what could be on the way, according to Ortega.

Jenna Ortega promises less romance and more horror for season 2

While speaking with Fallon on The Tonight Show, Ortega hinted that more horror and less romance could be on the way in season 2. Here’s what she said:

"“I think we want to up, kind of, the horror aspect a little bit and then get Wednesday out of the romantic situation and just let her be her own individual and fight her own crime.”"

After the first season of Wednesday came out, it didn’t take long for many fans to start shipping Wednesday and her roommate, Enid. The two girls didn’t see eye to eye at first but became close friends by the end of the season, and Jenna Ortega has let slip that she’s all for a romance between the characters.

During an interview with Variety, Enid actress Emma Myers was asked about a potential romance for the two characters, in which she shared: “Anything is possible in the show. We haven’t really spoken about direction at all, so I don’t really know what the game plan is for anything.”

Myers did, however, go on to share that she thinks Wednesday should be single in season 2:

"“As far as love interests go for Wednesday, I feel like at least for a second season, she needs to take her season of singleness. She just had a whole fiasco with her men, she’s got to lay it off for a little bit. I would be deterred from dating anybody if I had gone through that.”"

Many people (Ortega included) were frustrated with the fact that the show put Wednesday in a love triangle in the first season, so we’ll be curious to see what her love life is like in the second.

When Ortega shares these snippets about Wednesday season 2, we should listen because, in addition to starring as Wednesday Addams in the new season, she’s also going to be a producer on the new season, according to Elle.

Wednesday showrunners would like to make at least three or four seasons

Wednesday showrunners and producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough confirmed they have plans to make three or four seasons of the series, initially, according to Variety:

"For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully the show is successful. So you always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters."

If things go well, there’s no reason to think that Wednesday wouldn’t be renewed for season 3 and even season 4 in the future. This show is well on its way to becoming, potentially, the most-watched Netflix series of all time.

Wednesday scores Emmy nominations

Wednesday earned its biggest critical nomination to date! Ortega was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2023 Emmys for her role as Wednesday Addams in the first season of the hit Netflix original series.
