We’ve got some unfortunate news for Mindhunter fans. It looks like we may not be getting the season 3 we’ve all been waiting for. Despite the show’s critical acclaim and dedicated fanbase, and plenty of rumors suggesting a possible revival, it seems that the show will not be returning after all.

David Fincher spoke to the French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche in Feb. 2023 and was directly asked about the possibility of season 3. His answer (translated to English via Google Translate) via Screen Rant, would leave fans dejected:

"“I’m very proud of the first two seasons, but it’s a particularly expensive series and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment. I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series.”"

Everything we’ve heard about Mindhunter season 3

Though Netflix has never confirmed a third season of the thriller would be happening, we’ve gotten so many updates about it through rumors and Fincher himself. That’s probably because the first two seasons were so good and fans are still desperate for more. As we mentioned, the first we heard about a potential third season was in 2020, when it was announced the show was on hold and the cast had been released from their contracts. Of course, that wasn’t a good sign. And later that year, we got even more confirmation that we probably wouldn’t be getting a third installment.

In October 2020, David Fincher confirmed Netflix was not moving forward with Mindhunter season 3. However, in the same report, Vulture teased “Maybe in five years” we’d get the highly anticipated season. That small bit had fans hopeful.

We then got a glimmer of hope in 2021 when the site Small Screen published a report saying Fincher was in talks with Netflix again about a third season. “It’s still very early days,” they reported, “but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project.”

Unfortunately, we then went over a year without another tease, up until the latest interview with Fincher in Feb. 2023.

While this news is certainly disappointing for fans, we can take solace in the fact that we still have two gripping seasons to revisit and re-watch to our heart’s content. Who knows? Maybe one day in the future we’ll get a surprise announcement of Mindhunter‘s return. We’re sure this won’t be the last update we hear about a potential third season.
