1899

If anyone else tuned into the German mystery drama 1899, which hails from the creators of Netflix’s own original series Dark, and couldn’t get enough, you’re not alone. However, some combination of its expensive production value and lower-than-expected viewership landed the series as the first canceled by Netflix in 2023. The series had so much promise, but now it’s just another Netflix show left without a proper conclusion.

The creators of 1899 took to Instagram to share the cancellation news, clearly gutted over the decision made by Netflix. The only good news for fans is that Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar have another show in the works on the platform, titled Tyll. Fingers crossed that one has more success than 1899.

Inside Job

For fans of Inside Job, this cancellation might sting the most. The animated comedy premiered its 18-episode first season in two parts across October 2021 and November 2022 and was renewed for a second season in June 2022. But the renewal was reversed in January 2023, as announced by creator Shion Takeuchi. Taking back a renewal is a different kind of brutal. Networks and streamers should be far more transparent about what causes these cancellation decisions.
