Wednesday became one of Netflix’s biggest hits in 2022 and one of the most successful shows on the streaming platform of all time, with more than 1 billion hours viewed. Jenna Ortega had already been growing in popularity thanks to her reputation as a scream queen with acclaimed films like X and Scream under her belt, but her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series has made her a household name.

The show’s significant popularity across the globe has attracted fans from all over to Romania, where Wednesday films, giving the area a nice tourism boost. Now that Wednesday has finally been officially renewed for a second season, I’m sure that area will remain very popular with fans for years to come.

Romania sees tourism boom after Wednesday’s release

According to Euronews, Wednesday‘s international success has led to a tourism boom in Romania. The fictional Jericho and Nevermore Academy were filmed at the Buftea studios in Romania, right around the corner from the capital city of Bucharest.

Forbes India reports that since the show’s release, travel agency Expedia has seen a 55% increase in searches for Romanian hotels as fans flock to the area to tour the sets and check out sites featured in the Tim Burton-created series.

It’s not just Bucharest fielding an uptick in tourism, but the Romanian countryside has also seen a 15% surge on Expedia as people started looking into various vacation destinations. Increased tourism is great for the local economy as it drives business to hotels, restaurants, and other small businesses in the area.

TV tourism is very hot right now, with other big shows like House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power also driving tourism in destinations like Iceland, the United Kingdom, Los Angeles, New Zealand, and more.

Fans can take guided tours through Wednesday sets

Beyond visiting the country to look around at the various filming locations, fans can actually take guided sets through the Buftea studios and the show’s sets.

“It was a hefty production, that took over eight months to film, and involved beautiful people: people who have revived, who gave precedence to Romanian cinema and made everything happen here at the Buftea Studios, a place that has a very strong emotional, cinematic and cultural charge,” says production worker Flavian Dobre, per Euronews.
