What is Sonic Prime on Netflix about?

The release of Netflix’s animated series Sonic Prime is right around the corner and is based on a character you may know well. Sonic, ­­­­­­the beloved blue hedgehog, returns for a new tale, and fans of the icon can barely contain their excitement. If you were the prideful owner of a Sega Genesis in the ‘90s, you’re likely to remember his debut in the 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog video game.

Since then, the coin-collecting, high-speed hero has been the focus of a successful franchise loved by many, with numerous forms of entertainment centering around him. In September 1993, a series named Sonic the Hedgehog was released, which ran for two seasons.

Thereafter, he appeared on the big screen in the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog, followed by the 2022 sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Both saw huge success, with the third installment in the movie franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, set to release in 2024. The most recent iteration of the character was in the November 2022 video game Sonic Frontiers, which was an appreciated addition to the gaming community.

There’s no doubt that Sonic continues to pique fans’ interest, so celebrating the cherished character with the release of a present-day Netflix series is enticing. Written by Justin Peniston and Duncan Rouleau, Sonic Prime will see the hedgehog, also known as the Blue Blur, take on a mighty adventure with various characters, old and new.

Whether you have been an avid follower of Sonic since the ‘90s or have become an enthusiast in later decades, this new animated adaptation is a must-see.

What is Sonic Prime About?

After a confrontation with Dr. Eggman backfires, Sonic shatters an object known as the Paradox Prism, which blasts him and his friends into multiple parallel universes that make up what is known as the Shatterverse.

Each world — referred to as a Shatterspace — contains differing versions of Sonic’s friends and various obstacles. Matters are made worse by the Council, an evil group of Dr. Eggman duplicates who are out to get Sonic and company. In an attempt to reverse the damage he has caused, Sonic embarks on a journey to escape the multiverse, restore the world, and save his friends.

Based on the trailer, Sonic Prime looks packed to the brim with twists, turns, and excitement. The series also pays homage to some of Sonic’s friends from the ’90s and 2000s video games, featuring Amy Rose, Knuckles, and Tails.
