Where was Wednesday on Netflix filmed?

The wait is finally over! Tim Burton’s Wednesday — starring Jenna Ortega (Scream), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets), and more — made its Netflix debut on Nov. 23, and as many predicted, it’s a beautifully shot, spooky show with fantastic acting and storytelling.

The show follows the high school career of the famous, notoriously gothic, death-obsessed, and quick-witted Wednesday Addams at the Nevermore Academy — the academic institution that “nurtures outcasts, freaks and monsters.” The location plays an important role in the series and helps to bring the gothic-style universe truly to life. Wednesday was filmed in Romania

According to House Beautiful, the eight-episode Addams family series was shot on 70 different sets and in various locations in Bucharest, Romania. This beautiful place is the capital of the country, located in the southern part of Romania. It’s full of historical landmarks worth visiting. Reports claim Tim Burton was looking for a location that could capture the dark tone of the show, and Bucharest was the winning city!

Nevermore Academy

One of the most recognizable locations from the show that you can also visit in real life if you ever find yourself in Romania is that of the gothic-style boarding school that Wednesday attends. Cantacuzino Castle, in Prahova Valley near Bucegi Mountains, Romania, provides the backdrop for many of the exterior and aerial shots at Nevermore Academy.

"“[Nevermore Academy] is cool because we filmed in real castles and one of the places we went to was Sinaia and everything looked Photoshopped. I couldn’t even believe it and it fit very, very well with the aesthetic of the series so it was very appropriate.”"

Jericho, Pilgrim World, and more

The nearby town in Wednesday, Jericho and Pilgrim World, as well as the sheriff’s house and even the Nevermore quad, were almost entirely built specifically for the show. These locations were constructed at Buftea Studios, in Buftea, Romania. There is a real-life Jericho, Vermont, but that’s not where the show shot, of course. In the series, these scenes remind us of an older Addams Family title, the movie Addams Family Values. In that one, Wednesday (portrayed by Christina Ricci) gives an iconic speech about Thanksgiving.

Poe Cup lakes

For the scenes filmed during the heated race for the Poe Cup, two separate locations were used. According to IMDb, the scenes were filmed across two lakes in Romania called Brănești and Sterbei. In the show, the race is an annual event in the fictional Jericho River hosted by Nevermore Academy. Wednesday gets super competitive rowing alongside Enid, and they end up winning.

Since the series premiered on Netflix, tourism in Romania skyrocketed. Fans can take tours through the filming locations and see with their own eyes where Ortega and the rest of the cast worked. It hasn’t been confirmed whether or not Wednesday season 2 will also be shot in Romania, but wherever they decide to film, we’re sure it’ll be a hot spot after the new episodes come out.
