After years in development, The Sandman season 1 will finally make its way to Netflix on Aug. 5 with the release of the show’s highly anticipated 10-episode first season.

Based on the comic book of the same name by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics, The Sandman is a dark fantasy series that follows Dream, also known as Morpheus and The Sandman, one of the seven Endless, a group of powerful beings. He is the personification, as well as the lord over all dreams and stories.

In the series, Dream sets out on a mission to restore his kingdom to its former glory after being imprisoned for over a century.

At the heart of the show is Tom Sturridge, who will be playing Dream — and who is already earning rave reviews from critics. He’s joined by an incredible ensemble of actors who are set to play a key role in the show’s upcoming first season.

Among them is Patton Oswalt, who is no stranger to iconic franchises having worked with the likes of Marvel, Disney and DC Comics (among others) over the years.

Patton Oswalt voices Matthew the Raven in The Sandman

Patton Oswalt is a key part of The Sandman cast… you just might not realize it at first as Oswalt does not appear on-screen directly this season. Instead, he’s lending his iconic voice to the character of Matthew the Raven!

In the comics, Matthew begins his journey as a man named Matthew John Cable who first appeared in the Swamp Thing comic series. After dying in the Dreaming, Matthew accepts an offer from Dream to become a raven.

After becoming a raven, Matthew serves as a loyal subject to Dream, often providing advice and going on missions for Dream as a loyal and trustworthy emissary.

The character takes on a similar role in Netflix’s The Sandmanthough there are some slight changes made to the character’s backstory within the show. Following his introduction in the third episode of the season, Matthew becomes an integral part of the first season with Oswalt masterfully bringing the character to life this his work as a voice actor on the show!
