It’s Women’s History Month this March, and what could be better than lifting up the women in the Netflix shows we love watching? Some of the best women characters on Netflix are featured in the best mother-daughter shows like Gilmore Girls.
Complicated mother-daughter relationships on television are a dime a dozen, but there are so many great shows that dig deep into the heart, humor, and drama of those relationships and get it so right that you’re laughing, crying, arguing, and what have you right alongside them.
Thankfully, Netflix has no shortage of dynamic mother-daughter duos to add to your watch list for Women’s History Month and beyond. From Gilmore Girls to Ginny & Georgia, there’s generations of remarkable women to binge-watch right now on Netflix.
Best mother-daughter shows on Netflix
We’re sharing six of the best mother-daughter shows that are currently available to stream on Netflix, beginning below with the timeless generational tale of mothers and daughters, Gilmore Girls.
Gilmore Girls
You know them and you love them. Gilmore Girls first came into our lives in the year 2000 on The WB, and they returned to us for a four-part Netflix miniseries in 2016. The series centers on Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel), a mother-daughter duo who are only 16 years apart in age and are the best of friends.
Not to mention, Lorelai grapples with the strained relationship she shares her own mother, Emily (Kelly Bishop), who’s the exact opposite in every way. The series guides them through their endless ups in downs in their personal, romantic, and professional lives. It’s a delicate untangling that’s as emotional and relatable as it is warm and humorous.
Jane the Virgin
For some viewers, The CW’s Jane the Virgin was a tongue-in-cheek take on a telenovela that was full of shocking twists and turns. After all, the series follows a woman who was accidentally artificially inseminated with her boss’ baby. But at the center of the otherwise wild primetime soap was a heartfelt story of three generations of Latina women finding their own way in the world.
Ginny & Georgia
One of the newest hit Netflix original series, Ginny & Georgia centers on a young single mother and her two children as they start a new life in a new town. Ginny (Antonia Gentry) can sometimes be more mature than her mother Georgia (Brianne Howey) even though she’s half her age. It’s a heartwarming dramedy that’s soon returning for season 2.
Never Have I Ever
Obviously, the Netflix original series Never Have I Ever is a teen romantic comedy. Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) waffles in a love triangle between Ben (Jaren Lewison) and Paxton (Darren Barnet). We love that part of the series, but the gooey center of Never Have I Ever is the messy and very real relationship between Devi and her traditional mother Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan).
In the second season, their differences and similarities are explored even more as Nalini considers uprooting their lives to India from their American home in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles. We can’t wait to see what comes next for this pair when one of the best mother-daughter shows on Netflix returns for season 3 later this year.
Sweet Magnolias
The mother-daughter relationships aren’t as central to the plot of Sweet Magnolias as the other shows featured on this list, but the Netflix original soap wouldn’t be what it is without exploring the complexities of mothers and daughters.
Whether Maddie’s (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) relating to her own mother through her journey in motherhood or Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Annie (Anneliese Judge) are powering through the teen stage, it’s all part of the heart of Sweet Magnolias.
One Day at a Time
The family sitcom reboot One Day at a Time was a fan-favorite on Netflix, so it’s no surprise that when the series was canceled by Netflix after three seasons, Pop swooped in to save it for a seven-episode fourth season. (Unfortunately, it’s been canceled again.)
Much like Gilmore Girls and Jane the Virgin, One Day at a Time explored the mother-daughter relationships across three generations. Rita Morena, Justina Machado, and Isabella Gomez brought those three women to wonderful life, and the first three seasons of the sitcom are still streaming on Netflix.
