Is Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life renewed for season 2?
By Reed Gaudens
As of January 2022, it’s been a little over five years since Netflix fans last caught up with Gilmore Girls in the revival miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The beloved mother-daughter dramedy’s popularity hasn’t waned one bit since then.
Although the critical and fan reception to the revival was mixed, Gilmore Girls diehards still enjoyed spending more time in Stars Hollow, a reunion no one could have seen coming after the original series’ finale on The CW in 2007.
In the years following the release of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Netflix, the cast and creator have talked about returning for another installment of the miniseries, and false rumors of an actual renewal have gotten fans’ hopes way up.
Will there be a season 2 of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life? In this day and age of continued reboots and revivals, you can never say never. But the Gilmore Girls revival has not been officially renewed for a second season by Netflix.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life future
While promoting her new Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers in April 2021, Lauren Graham gave Collider a hopeful yet honest answer about the future of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
The erstwhile Lorelai Gilmore states that while she still frequently check in with her on-screen mother (Kelly Bishop), daughter (Alexis Bledel), and the show’s creator (Amy Sherman-Palladino), they haven’t made any concrete plans to dive back into the Gilmores’ corner of the universe.
Read Graham’s full quote about Gilmore Girls from Collider:
"“I don’t ever say never. I still talk to Amy and Kelly [Bishop] and Alexis [Bledel]. There is not a plan for it. Everyone is doing their own thing. If that came up again, I love that character so much and I love Amy. I will work with her, any time. It would just be a matter of responsibility to the fans and what we could give them that’s deserving of their devotion, or should it just live in reruns. So, I don’t know.”"
It’s great to know that Graham has such a love and respect for Lorelai and wants to do right by the fans. Considering how most reacted to the storied “final four words,” season 2 would have to tell one heck of a story to get some fans back on board.
Other Gilmore Girls stars have expressed interest in returning for another installment of the revival if the timing and story are right. Right now, the future of A Year in the Life will, like Luke and Lorelai’s romance, just have to be written in the stars.
