It’s an inevitably unfortunate truth we all must face sooner or later: The day our favorite comfort show leaves Netflix. Look, nothing can prepare you for The Office or Friends skipping your chosen streamer for another home, and we’re not looking forward to the day Gilmore Girls leaves either.

Fortunately, it doesn’t seem as though that day is on the imminent horizon, but a future where Gilmore Girls is no longer streaming on Netflix is completely within the realm of possibility. It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow, it may not be next month, but it could happen.

Not to mention, due to the complicated ownership and distribution details behind the scenes of the beloved dramedy series that hails from both The WB and The CW, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life could also wind up on a completely different platform sometime in the future.

If any of this information about the fate of Gilmore Girls on Netflix has your head spinning, allow us to break down exactly what this all means. For now, keep streaming the series and catching up with your Stars Hollow faves, and we’ll tell you when they’re leaving Netflix.

Is Gilmore Girls leaving Netflix?

The short answer is no, Gilmore Girls is not leaving Netflix anytime soon. According to What’s on Netflix, The CW’s deal entails its series remain on the streamer for five years after their series finale on the network. Since the 2000s series falls outside of that release pattern, it’s harder to tell how long Netflix has the rights to stream it.

The series has called Netflix home since October 2014, making this coming October its seventh anniversary on the platform. Under usual CW circumstances, Gilmore Girls would have hit the road to another streaming service two years ago, most likely to HBO Max along with other Warner Bros. Television-owned properties.

However, there’s also the case of Netflix’s 2016 revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The four-episode miniseries debuted in November 2016, making this year its big five-year anniversary. Could the revival and its sire be headed off of Netflix?

Although anything’s possible, Netflix hasn’t made any announcements regarding the series leaving the platform, and it seems unlikely that it would be willing to lose either the original or revival series, which is technically a Netflix original. Both are still popular titles and should very well remain the core heavy hitters on the streamer.

For the moment, Gilmore fans have nothing to worry about when it comes to Lorelai and Rory leaving you behind. They are sticking around for what seems like a while, but the chance of the series leaving in the future isn’t zero. But where they lead, fans will follow.
