Not scary Halloween movies on Netflix
We all know not everyone is into scary movies! No matter your age, sometimes horror just isn’t your thing, and that’s totally okay. Jump scares, slashers, and buckets of blood don’t have to be your go-to movies this October.
Family Halloween movies are a good bet when it comes to less scary and more spooky. However, there are definitely films aimed at adults that forgo the scariness and up the creepiness factor so that you don’t have to cover your eyes for half the movie.
Netflix is here to provide not-so-scary movies this Halloween season! Here are some films available to stream this fall that prove to be more spooky than scary.
Let’s get the list started with ParaNorman!
ParaNorman
Release Year: 2012
Directed By: Sam Fell and Chris Butler
Starring: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tucker Albrizzi, Anna Kendrick
This PG film from LAIKA Studios is a claymation gem that follows Norman Babcock, a misunderstood boy in the town of Blithe Hollow who can see ghosts, including his loving grandma. When a centuries-old curse is loosed that causes colonial-era corpses to rise from their graves, Norman, his sister, and his friend, Neil, must find out what the zombies want and save their town. ParaNorman is more heartwarming than scary and can be enjoyed by all ages!
ParaNorman focuses on the themes of family and self-preservation from differing perspectives. While Norman is an outcast and constantly bullied at school, he doesn’t wish that harm upon others. The harrowing 17th-century tale that led to the Blithe Hollow being cursed will leave you with a broken heart that will be healed by the end of ParaNorman.
LAIKA is a claymation-exclusive production company that broke into the feature film industry with their critically acclaimed film Coraline (2009), and most recently Missing Link (2019). LAIKA’s movies are famous for intensive emotional storylines and an innovative combination of practical claymation and CG effects, which revolutionized the stop-motion industry.
Norman Babcock is voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee, an Australian actor best known for Let Me In (2010). His sister Courtney is voiced by none other than Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect). Norman’s friend Niel is brought to life by Tucker Albrizzi (A.P. Bio), while Niel’s older brother Mitch’s voice actor is Casey Affleck (Gone Baby Gone). The gang’s unlikely member, the bully Alvin, is voiced by Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad).
