What happened to Monsignor Pruitt in Midnight Mass?

If you just started watching Midnight Mass or you just finished the new Netflix original series and need a little recap on what really happened to Monsignor Pruitt, we have the answer you’re looking for.

There are Midnight Mass spoilers below! 

Early in Midnight Mass, the new Netflix series from Mike Flanagan, we learn that Monsignor Pruitt has fallen ill and is recovering back on the mainland. Father Paul (Hamish Linklater) has been chosen to step in and take Pruitt’s place until the Monsignor is healthy and well enough to come back to Crockett Island.

I think we all knew this new priest’s story was a little suspect, right? Well, we were right!

What really happened to Monsignor Pruitt?

We have to wait quite a while until what happened to Monsignor Pruitt is revealed, and I don’t think anyone saw it coming.

Prior to us meeting Monsignor Pruitt, who is an old man with dementia, it’s revealed that he was on a trip and became sick. Later, we learn that’s true, sort of.

Monsignor Pruitt was sick before he left on the trip. He ends up becoming very confused and getting lost, and somehow, he comes in contact with an angel. He ends up drinking the angel’s blood, and something amazing happens. He is restored, basically. His dementia is gone, and he looks a lot younger. He’s given a new lease on life, so to speak.

He, then, returns to Crockett Island with the angel. Instead of coming clean and revealing the “miracle” immediately, he disguises his identity and becomes “Father Paul.” That’s right; Monsignor Pruitt is actually Father Paul.

While some people find out the truth about Monsignor Pruitt beforehand, he reveals it to the whole church and most of the residents of Crockett Island during Midnight Mass on Easter.

So, there you have it! Monsignor Pruitt is Father Paul and Father Paul is Monsignor Pruitt.
