What is the twist in Midnight Mass?

Midnight Mass premiered on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021. This series will make you think, and it asks a lot of questions about faith and what it means, among other things.

It’s also a Mike Flanagan series, so you know this Netflix original series has a lot going on! There’s always something going on that doesn’t meet the eye initially.

So, to help you understand a little bit better about what happened in Midnight Mass, we put together a little breakdown about the Midnight Mass twist and where the story starts to shift.

Midnight Mass twist

There are few major twists in Midnight Mass. Is anything really as it seems? Well, as it turns out, no, nothing is really as it seems.

Was it really God performing these miracles? How were these blessings coming to all the people of Crockett Island? Why is everyone getting younger? How can Leeza walk again? What is going on?

These are all very valid questions, and it all comes back to the big twist in the Netflix original series, and it all has to do with Father Paul, played by Hamish Linklater.

Who is Father Paul in Midnight Mass?

So, Father Paul is not really who he says he is. As you remember, Father Paul comes to Crockett Island to take over for Monsignor Pruitt who took ill on a trip and is not coming back to the island for a while as he recovers.

It seems like a good story, but it’s not true.

Father Paul is actually Monsignor Pruitt, and while he was on this trip, he had an encounter with an angel. Pruitt drinks the angel’s blood and becomes young again. His dementia, and everything that was wrong with him, is cured.

Pruitt takes on the alias of Father Paul and brings the angel back to Crockett Island to try to help all of the people on the island.

So, the twist is that Pruitt has returned with this angel, and he starts giving the people at the church the angel blood. He spikes the wine, basically, and everyone starts to “heal” as he did. Leeza is able to walk again after she was paralyzed. The churchgoers start to become younger.

And, that’s all because of this angel.

The other part of the twist is that, at a certain point, these people get hooked on the angel blood like Monsignor Pruitt and they eventually become vampires. They can’t go in the sun. They need fresh blood for sustenance. It’s pretty revolting stuff.
