In the mood for a serious horror series that’ll have you up all night thinking about all the disturbing things you just watched? If that’s the case, Midnight Mass should be added to your watch list ASAP! The show just hit Netflix today and is bound to get people talking about all the wild things that go on. Created by Mike Flanagan, it had a lot of hype leading into its release and it really doesn’t disappoint.

Midnight Mass is about a small town called Crockett Island, which is shaken up when a new priest named Father Paul (Hamish Linklater) comes to town. Younger and more charming than their monsignor who apparently fell ill and is seeking medical assistance on the mainland, people warm up to the new priest rather quickly. And their trust in him is only detrimental to the town in the end.

Spoilers ahead for Midnight Mass.

Though things end very tragically for Crockett Island in the Midnight Mass finale, many moments leading up to the last episode are extremely promising. It seems that once Father Paul shows up, miracles start happening and the town becomes a better place. This, however, is temporary.

One of these miracles takes place pretty early on in the season, in which a paralyzed young lady is able to walk again. The scene is pretty intense, as everyone is at church and Leeza (Annarah Cymone) is sitting in her wheelchair, watching and participating in the service. Things take a turn, however, when Father Paul tells her to come up to the stand to take communion. Understandably, her parents and others at the church are angered by this request. Leeza can’t walk, and so it’s extremely rude of Father Paul to tell her to walk up to him.

However, Leeza feels something and she’s able to get up. She walks over to Father Paul and is ready to take the bread and wine.

Of course, this is shocking. So how in the world does Father Paul heal Leeza? Is it actually a miracle? Find out below.

How does Leeza walk again in Midnight Mass?

It takes a few episodes for it to be fully revealed why Leeza is able to walk again. For starters, we learn that Father Paul is actually Monsignor Pruitt, just a younger version. We see in a flashback that while Pruitt was in Jerusalem, he was attacked by an angel in a cave and drank the angel’s blood.

Because of the blood he consumes, Pruitt wakes up and is years and years younger. This is the version who shows up to Crockett Island, after deciding that he must return to his home and bring the same power of God he experienced back to his people. He hopes the angel will follow, and it does.

We also find out that Pruitt has been giving the townspeople the angel’s blood disguised as wine at church. That means that everyone who’s attended has consumed the same blood that de-aged Pruitt, and those who have consumed more than others face some serious consequences.

For some, these consequences are actually masked as miracles. Take Dr. Sarah Gunning’s (Annabeth Gish) mom Mildred (Alex Essoe), for instance. At the start of the show, Mildred isn’t doing too well as she’s old, fragile, and has trouble remembering things. After Pruitt visits her a few times and she takes communion with the blood, however, she begins de-aging very rapidly.

This is the same for Leeza. Because she had been consuming the blood, it was healing her body. This is why she can walk again. But if she drank too much, it would actually deplete her iron levels and she would not only crave blood, but also burn up in the sunlight. This is, sadly, the case for many of the characters in the end.

Midnight Mass is certainly a compelling and fresh take on horror in religion, and it’s definitely worth checking out. You won’t be expecting what happens in the end! All seven episodes are streaming on Netflix right now.
