Midnight Mass premieres Friday, Sept. 24. The latest Mike Flanagan horror series will take viewers to Crockett Island where a small and isolated community has accepted a new priest into their fold.

Father Paul has brought with him blessings and miracles or so the islanders think. But strange things are happening all around their community and something isn’t right. Few in town are willing to put down their religious fervor long enough to start asking questions. However, the priest isn’t the only person to arrive in Crockett recently.

A native son of the island has made his return and the home he’s come back to is one that he doesn’t recognize with Father Paul as his community’s shepherd. It’s a story fit for chills as the townspeople fall deeper into their religious devotion and are willing to do anything to continue the miracles they’ve seen.

As Flanagan is known to Netflix subscribers as the creator of The Haunting anthology series, it’s understandable that there’s confusion on whether Midnight Mass is the next installment of the anthology.

It’s not. This horror mystery is a standalone limited series that’s separate from The Haunting. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Flanagan explained why:

"One of the things that defines the Haunting anthology for me is that both of them so far are about updating and riffing on existing classic literature. Midnight Mass was always so original and important and personal, it just never felt like it was ever going to be a part of that universe."

Given his response, here’s what we know about season 3 of the anthology and whether fans should expect a third season soon.

Will there be a third season of The Haunting?

As Flanagan stated, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor are both works of fiction predicated on themes drawn from classic lit. They’re full of homages and twists, subversions of what’s found in the source material the shows draw from.

Bearing that in mind, fans need to anticipate an indefinite wait for another installment of The Haunting anthology. For there to be a third season, Flanagan says the stars would have to align.

"It would have to be with the right piece of IP, it would have to be with the right ghost-centric story, and it would have to really fit with Bly and Hill House."

So while another horror by Mike Flanagan is set to hit Netflix in the next year e.g.The Midnight Club, a third season of The Haunting isn’t. We’ll keep you posted on more The Haunting season 3 news as it comes in. Stay tuned to Netflix Life!
