Will Maeve be in Sex Education season 4?

Sex Education season 3 features a very interesting ending for shippers of Motis or Maevis or whatever the kids are calling Maeve and Otis these days.

Spoilers ahead for Sex Education season 3! 

Just when it looks like Otis and Maeve are about to become a couple and start dating for real real, Maeve changes her mind and decides to go to the United States to continue her studies. Otis and Maeve don’t put a label on things, but they agree to see what’s up when she returns.

But, wait, when is Maeve coming back? Will she be in Sex Education season 4 on Netflix?

It’s not looking so promising right now!

Will Emma Mackey be in Sex Education season 4?

I never thought Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve, would leave the show before it officially ends, but it looks like that might happen now. Maeve, Otis, and Eric have been the show’s three central characters for three seasons, and while that focus has shifted to other characters at times, it always comes back to Otis, Maeve, and Eric.

With Maeve moving to America, it’s possible that Mackey will not be in Sex Education season 4, assuming Netflix announces the renewal. It’s possible that Mackey will be leaving Sex Education. I can’t really wrap my head around that or what it means right now.

If you’re looking for Mackey or someone to shoot down the speculation, stop reading. It’s going to get worse.

According to a Hunger interview with Mackey, the Sex Education star hinted that the end might be coming sooner rather than later.

Here’s what Mackey told Hunger:

"“It’s a complicated thing to me. Sex Education is so momentous as a concept, as a show, and the cast are phenomenal. I genuinely care about them all a lot and I made lifelong friends. We’ve kind of grown up together,” she says. “But the bittersweet nature of it is that I also can’t be 17 my whole life.”"

Interesting… I don’t quite know what to make of that. It doesn’t sound like Mackey is for sure leaving Sex Education or won’t have some role in the new season.

If I had to guess, Mackey will definitely be back in some capacity for Sex Education season 4. It sounds like we could see less of Maeve in season 4, but that could also be due to the story.

Ultimately, we should see Maeve and Otis together in Sex Education at least one more time. If we don’t get that, I feel like everyone will feel robbed. The creative team has been teasing Otis and Maeve for three seasons. It would be cruel to not let that relationship happen at some point, right?

There’s a larger conversation here that needs to be had: Is Sex Education season 4 the final season?

It seems like that given where the story is headed, what Mackey is saying about not playing a teenager forever, and Netflix’s usual behavior when it comes to teen shows lasting four-ish seasons.

Maeve should definitely be back in Sex Education season 4, but it might be more limited than what finds are used to. That’s my guess! I’ll share more information when we find out more about Sex Education season 4.
