Is Stranger Things based on a true story?

Fans of the Netflix original series Stranger Things were happy to finally learn that the fourth season will release in 2022. Although everyone would love to see it sooner, it was good to get this news along with a sneak peek trailer that has gotten the fandom excited for what is to come.

The Duffer brothers series is a sci-fi horror drama that focuses on the supernatural events in Hawkins, Indiana in the ’80s. Stranger Things has an amazing storyline that follows a group of teens who decide to investigate on their own when one of their friends mysteriously comes up missing. This leads to the discovery of something much bigger than anyone could have imagined.

The cast features a great lineup of newcomers, who since their introduction in season 1 have gone on to many other great roles. Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery and Noah Schnapp make up the original group of teens from season 1.

Since then, many others have also joined the cast. Being a series set in the ’80s, it only makes sense to feature some great actors from that era. Winona Ryder, Matthew Modine, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser and Cary Elwes are all ’80s faces that are familiar.

Is Stranger Things based on a true story?

One question that is often asked about Stranger Things is if this series is based on a true story. The Duffer brothers have drawn on true events during the Cold War and conspiracy theories involving secret government experiments, so in one respect, the story is based on some truth.

The experiments with Eleven are based on MK-Ultra, which is a top-secret CIA project that the US government created in 1953. This project used LSD and other drugs for mind control and to gather information. Digital Spy has a great article regarding this project and ties it to the series.

So, although the story was loosely based on some true events, the overall story is fiction.

That doesn’t take anything away from the series, as it is an outstanding sci-fi series that takes the viewer on a wild ride of a story. The fourth season of Stranger Things is bound to bring many new elements and characters which fans are looking forward to.
