The Netflix original action film Gunpowder Milkshake showcases a group of female assassins. The film gives off major Kill Bill vibes with Scarlet’s Theme song and all the girl power moments. Some John Wick-ish never-ending action scenes keep the film in constant motion. Overall, I felt it was a great action flick that has the makings of a franchise.

Scarlet (Lena Headey) is a professional assassin who works for The Firm. This necessitates the abandoning of her daughter, Sam (Karen Gillan). The girl was then raised by Nathan (Paul Giamatti), the organizer of the same crime syndicate Sam’s mother worked for. The film shows Sam at 15 and then again as a grown woman who has now earned her place at the top assassin in The Firm.

Although the story is unique, the film has the over-stylized feel of a comic book adaptation. And, that is meant in a good way. Amidst the dark background of the crime world, this film throws in dashes of neon colors that are very unexpected and some fun little bits, like a gun bag with “I heart kittens” emblazoned on the side.

Warning: Spoilers from the movie ahead!

How does Gunpowder Milkshake end?

As the dust settles and you think the fighting between The Firm’s all-male crew and the Librarians’ all-female crew is about to end, something happens. Emily (Chloe Coleman), the young girl Sam takes under her wing, is kidnapped by one of The Firm’s henchmen. This requires Sam to do something, and that choice is easy: She must save Emily.

Sam arranges a meeting with The Firm’s leader in a diner we saw at the film’s beginning. They discuss what he feels is justified action for Sam’s killing of his son. He reneges on his deal to set Emily free if he can have Sam. This sets the Librarians into action, as they are posing as waitresses in the diner. Another major action scene with much blood and gunfire occurs in the diner, which is usually a neutral zone for the criminals who meet there.

A short time later, Emily arrives on Nathan’s doorstep, posing as a Girl Scout selling cookies. She is once again helping Sam as her apprentice. Sam talks to Nathan on a cell phone while she has a laser sight position on his chest. She tells him to leave the Librarians, Emily and herself alone or else. He responds that he can’t make any promises.

As with many films, you can see a sequel forming. Perhaps there would be a bit of a time jump, and Emily is now a trained assassin alongside Sam as they take out each of The Firms members.

The film had mixed reviews, but I felt it was a great action film with a bit of adorable sprinkled in, making it a great female action film.
