Lucifer season 5 part 2 kicks off exactly where part 1 left us, God’s arrival amid an intense fight between his three sons, Lucifer, Amenadiel, and Michael. The sun is shining bright behind God (Dennis Haysbert), it’s one heavenly arrival!
Just as D.B. Woodside had teased, his character Amenadiel immediately feels great shame and is shocked by his father’s sudden arrival. Michael surprises no one. He resorts to playing the victim and blaming Lucifer for everything. Lucifer is the only one who doesn’t change character, we love how he always keeps it real!
God isn’t listening to any of his sons, though. He tells them that enough is enough, that it doesn’t matter what is happening or who started it, they are family and should act like it.
Amenadiel reluctantly hugs Michael, but Lucifer storms off (as he should!), and we catch Maze hiding, knowing this isn’t the right moment to ask God for a soul.
God meets his grandson, Charlie, and unfreezes time. The police department believes there was an earthquake, and Chloe is left confused as to why she’s alone when she was in the middle of a conversation with Lucifer. And an important one at that!
What an introduction to the back half of Lucifer season 5! Let’s recap Lucifer season 5 part 2, episode 9, titled, “Family Dinner,” by highlighting the top moments.
What happens in Lucifer season 5 part 2, episode 9?
Ella is still not over recent events
Ella is back at work! She needs to stay busy to keep her mind off things, but that’s easier said than done! Sweet Ella has clearly not healed from her boyfriend-turned-serial-killer. As they are investigating a case, Ella tells Dan and Chloe to introduce her to all the suspects, because surely the one she’s attracted to is the killer. Ouch. We’re hoping Ella finds love before the end of the series, she deserves it!
Maze asks God for a soul
Maze catches God alone, and when I say “catches” I really mean God was already expecting her. He is God, after all. Maze says she needs a soul to connect with others, blaming having no soul on the reason why she feels so alone.
Our hearts truly ache for Maze, she’s the most misunderstood character in the series. God tells Maze that she is perfect the way she is and he wouldn’t change a thing. Maze leaves, furious. And who can blame her?
The best seat in the house
It’s time for the most intense and awkward family dinner of the century! Linda tries to leave the room, but God tells her that she’s family and belongs at the table. Aww, sweet! But Linda would truly rather not be part of this family drama.
To audiences, though, Linda has the best seat in the house! Forget what’s for dinner and dessert, we are here for the tea!
Michael is his true fake self, pretending all is well and being passive-aggressive. Lucifer makes it known he’s not happy to be there, and Amenadiel tries to keep the peace. Lucifer calls Michael out for installing fear into Amenadiel about his son, turning Maze against him, and kidnapping Chloe. Good ol’ Lucifer.
Finally, Lucifer asks his dad if he loves them, God replies that if he has to tell them whether or not he loves them, he has failed. As a parent myself, I get God’s answer, but come on, Lucifer is hurting, just answer the question!
Michael is banished from Earth
Amenadiel doesn’t want Charlie to be human. In Amenadiel’s eyes, humans suffer, grow old, and die. He asks God to take him instead of Charlie, to make Charlie an angel and Amenadiel a human, God tells Amenadiel that fatherhood is never easy. Eye roll!
Michael steps into the room, interrupting this moment, he asks God if he’s ready to return to heaven. God tells Michael he can go on without him and that Michael is no longer welcomed on Earth. Amenadiel is shocked and asks his father if he is banishing Michael from Earth. God does not confirm nor deny this, as his only reply is, “if that’s how you insist on putting it.”
What are those three words?
Chloe finally manages to speak with Lucifer about things. She promises Lucifer time and space to figure things out, knowing there’s a lot of family issues and trauma in his life. Lucifer explains that he is incapable of love, claiming that if his own father can’t tell his children he loves them, how can he say those three words?
Lucifer apologizes to Chloe and tells her that if he were to tell her these three words, he’d be lying. The three words being “I love you.”
If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of Deckerstar fans breaking! Is Lucifer incapable of love? Lies! We don’t believe it. We just hope Lucifer realizes how crazy this idea is sooner rather than later.
Lucifer season 5 part 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
