As noted by Disctractify, John David Washington has defended his onscreen romantic relationship with Zendaya, who is 12 years his junior. The 36-year-old dreamboat once told Variety that he never even thought about the age gap because of his co-star’s “personal and professional maturity” on set. According to Washington, he “wasn’t concerned about it” because Zendaya “is a woman.”

“People are going to see in this film how much of a woman she is,” the BlacKkKlansman star added, before humbly calling Zendaya the seasoned acting vet and himself the real “rookie.” What a gentleman.

From Instagram to interviews, the son of Denzel Washington remains pretty private about his real-life romantic relationships right now, if he has any going on. And we can totally respect that. With that said, however, he hasn’t shied away from professing his love for Beyonce while being interviewed by Ellen DeGeneres. In that same 2018 interview, he also confirmed he was “single AF.”
