Pretty soon, we’ll get to watch Zendaya and John David Washington make Netflix movie magic in the upcoming romance-drama, Malcolm and Marie.

For this made-in-quarantine film, we’re invited into the very personal, provocative, and profound dilemmas of a filmmaker and his girlfriend after returning home from a film premiere. Tensions run high as they wait for the reviews to be announced and in some complex ways, both characters are waiting for the other shoe to drop.

There’s definitely more to this one than initially meets the eye. Thanks to its newly-released clips, however, we know that this film is going to be truly stunning, no matter how you slice it.

So speaking of its visuals, let’s talk about all that moody monochromatic footage we get to see in the Malcolm and Marie trailer. Shall we?

Is Malcolm and Marie all black and white?

While Malcolm and Marie’s love story is definitely not black and white, the entire film is. For this modern tale of love and woe, the focus remains on the emotions of its lead characters. Emotionally visceral and visually striking, the moody cinematography of Malcolm and Marie is sure to send some of us on an emotional journey all our own as we dive deeper into the film.

Why was Malcolm and Marie shot in black in white?

As reported by The Things, the film’s star Zendaya previously explained the choice to go black and white, noting that it wasn’t just for its artfully appealing look. According to the Euphoria star, black and white adds to the timelessness of the film.

“There was a thought also about reclaiming the narrative of black and white Hollywood and black actors really having their moment at that time,” Zendaya said.

When it comes to the greater aim of this film, those behind the scenes also say Malcolm and Marie‘s cinematography was chosen to “pay tribute” to the black and white era and to “reclaim that beauty and that elegance with these two black actors.”

While the movie hasn’t been released yet, I’d say their mission was definitely accomplished. As The Things notes, Malcolm and Marie was written with its two leads in mind. While Sam Levinson is credited as the director, this poignant project was reportedly pieced together through a collaborative effort by everyone involved.

According to Zendaya, the concept came to be after “a lot of creative discussions” with Levinson. And we couldn’t be more eager to see the captivating result.

Malcolm and Marie premieres on February 5, 2021 on Netflix.
