Happy 40th Birthday Colin O’Donoghue: Movies and shows on Netflix
Anyone who knows me knows that Colin O’Donoghue is my favorite actor. Period. The charming Irish actor captured my heart and so many other hookers’ hearts (yes that is the name of his fans) when he swaggered in as the dashing rapscallion Killian Jones, aka Captain Hook, on Once Upon a Time.
Since those wonderful Once Upon a Time days, I’ve continued to follow his career. During his six seasons on the magical show I was hooked (pun intended), but it’s also been great to see his talent showcased on other projects.
With today being the lovely actor’s 40th birthday, we’re taking a moment to fangirl a little bit more and go through what shows and movies of his you can watch on Netflix.
Unfortunately Once Upon a Time left Netflix in September 2020, but all seven seasons are available to stream on Disney Plus. Also on Disney Plus is Colin’s most recent work on The Right Stuff where he plays Lieutenant Gordon Cooper, one of the Mercury Seven and the nation’s first astronauts.
Which Colin O’Donoghue movies and shows are on Netflix?
So what of Colin’s work is on Netflix? Unfortunately, there isn’t much, but there’s still some great options to either rewatch or watch for the first time!
Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings
Colin stars in one of the Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings episodes, J.J. Sneed. The anthology series’ seventh episode is a western with Colin playing outlaw J.J. Sneed. He meets Maddie Hawkins as he’s trying to steal her horse, but the feisty gal is able to stop him. She ends up joining J.J. on the road and the two grow close. It seems like he cares about her but actually betrays her. Don’t worry though, Maddie gets the best of him at the end.
Colin nailed this role! This is one of my favorite characters that he’s played. I was completely charmed and under J.J. Sneed’s spell!
It looks like Colin and Dolly Parton share the same birthday month! Here’s a post he shared on Jan. 19 from their time on set:
Carrie Pilby
Colin played another not so great guy in a movie, Carrie Pilby. The story follows 19-year-old child prodigy, Carrie Pilby, who is not good at social interaction. In flashbacks, we see some of her time at Harvard University where she meets Colin’s character, David Harrison. He is her English professor turned loved interest, which makes their relationship complex given her age. They do end up going their separate ways and we see how this relationship affects Carrie going forward.
This was a really difficult role to portray, but Colin played the professor so well. You feel creeped out by David and hate his character, which means Colin successfully portrayed him the way the character was written.
Wizards: Tales of Arcadia
And finally, the last of Colin’s work on Netflix is not where you can see him, but hear him. He lends his voice to the Netflix animated trilogy, Tales of Arcadia. His character, Douxie, is a wizard-in-training who worked under the apprenticeship of Merlin. In the first two parts of the trilogy, Douxie only appears in a few episodes with quick scenes.
In the final part of the series though, Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, Douxie takes center stage. Wizards follows Douxie and the heroes of Arcadia as they travel back in time to Camelot where conflict is brewing between the human, troll and magical worlds.
This was Colin’s first voice acting role and it was so fun for us fans to experience his acting through a different medium. It’s not easy. Seriously, all the props to any actor who has done voice acting because many times they’re in the recording booth alone and have to use their own imagination.
Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans
While Wizards was supposed to be the end, back in August Entertainment Weekly reported that a movie is in the works to wrap up the trilogy’s story. According to the series creator, Guillermo del Toro, Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, is coming to Netflix this summer.
Colin will most likely return to voice Douxie!
Check out the tweet below from Del Toro and executive producer, Aaron J. Waltke:
Happy 40th Birthday Colin O’Donoghue! I look forward to seeing what’s in store for our favorite actor and what new characters he’ll play.
