It’s impossible to compile a list of shows similar to Fate: The Winx Saga without acknowledging the legacy The CW has cultivated on their network for dark supernatural dramas. Aptly named, Legacies is a spin-off of The Originals that follows Hope Mikaelson’s life at the Salvatore School for the Young and the Gifted.

Hope, the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall, has a family tree marked by power as she is descended from vampire, werewolf, and witch bloodlines. But she is not the only young girl struggling with the weight of her family name, tragedy, and the plights of every day life as a teenager. Her classmates, be they friends or enemies, are at the school to master their abilities, too.

It can be hard out here for supernatural beings plagued by both drama in the classroom and the nefarious getting in the way of their social lives. Still, balancing normal and otherworldly wants and desires comes with the gig of having to keep up appearances when humans aren’t supposed to be aware of the extraordinary world right in front of their eyes.

Legacies season 1 and 2 are available to stream. The show’s third season premiered on The CW on January 21, 2021.

Based on the book series of the same name by Lev Grossman, The Magicians primarily follows graduate student Quentin Coldwater’s discovery of a magical world. Obsessed with Fillory and Further, a series of books he’s been in love with since he was a child, Quentin is surprised to learn the magical world he thought was fiction is actually real.

Immediately enthralled, Quentin leaps at the opportunity to study magic at Brakebills University of Magical Pedagogy. However, his friend, Julia Wicker, isn’t as fortunate. Rejected as an applicant and dissuaded from attempting magic, Julia refuses to give up this new power that could be hers if she fights for it. Her determination leads her to hedge witches, self-taught magicians considered to be dangerous and a stain on the magical world.

In The Magicians, magic is both a tool and a weapon. Unstable when wielded by those untrained or incapable of its mastery, the power can cause disaster and calamity. But in everything, there is a balance, and in that balance, there are always those willing to upend order. Magic is indifferent after all. Neither good nor bad, only elegant in its infinite possibilities.
