There are rumors that Stranger Things season 5 is the last season

While Stranger Things season 4 is currently in the works, we already know that it’s not the end of the series. The Duffer Brothers shared that news recently, and that likely means Stranger Things is coming back for season 5.

As many Stranger Things fans have seen online, there are tons of rumors that Stranger Things is going to be the final installment of the Netflix series.

Unfortunately, we have no indication if those rumors, and even some reports, are actually true. Netflix has not confirmed that Stranger Things season 5 is happening, so obviously, the streaming network has not confirmed if the show will end after season 5 or if there’s another season in the works.

And, I think it’s important to keep that in mind. Netflix has a long-term plan for Stranger Things, but I’m also quite sure that Netflix is also going to let the Duffer brothers and the creative team decide how long the series will go. That’s kind of how Netflix does business with big, super-popular shows.

Even if Stranger Things was planned to be four or five seasons, like the Duffer brothers said at the beginning of the Stranger Things run on Netflix, the streaming network seems very open to amending expectations. Look at The Crown. The series was supposed to run six seasons, and then Netflix announced it would end after season 5, before renewing the series for season 6.

We also saw Netflix renew Lucifer for season 5, its final season, only to order more episodes and renew the series for a sixth season. Things like that happen. So, just because Netflix might have intended Stranger Things to run for four or five seasons after season 1, that doesn’t mean it will remain that way moving forward.

Looking at the big picture, it’s unclear if Stranger Things season 5 will actually be the final season of the series.

There was a report earlier this year that the fifth season would be the final season and Netflix would be splitting the season into two parts, as they have done other shows like Lucifer, Grace and Frankie, BoJack Horseman, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. 

That makes sense, but again, it hasn’t been confirmed by anyone close to the series yet.

Based on the Duffer brothers’ reluctance to say the fifth season would be the final season in a recent THR interview, I’m guessing there’s something else planned for the ending of Stranger Things. Maybe that’s a sixth season, maybe the fifth season is split into two parts, or maybe we’re going to a special movie ending for Stranger Things. Honestly, I’d be happy with any of those options!

The good news is Stranger Things season 4 won’t be the final season of the series! We’re hoping season 5 won’t be the final season of the series, either. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait quite a while, most likey, until we see if season 5 will or won’t be the last season.
