Stranger Things season 4 would have wrapped production in August

In a perfect world, Stranger Things season 4 would have finished filming by now.

According to a report from What’s on Netflix, Stranger Things season 4 would have wrapped production at the beginning of August 2020. Assuming there were not major production delays, the series would have been in post-production, and we would have been anxiously awaiting the trailer, release date announcement, and of course, the full season on Netflix early in 2021.

Unfortunately, a lot has happened since Stranger Things season 4 started production in February. The COVID-19 pandemic caused production shutdowns all over of the world.

In March, Stranger Things season 4 was delayed for a few weeks and then ultimately shut down for good.

When will Stranger Things season 4 restart filming?

Most likely scenario: Maybe September, but probably later in the year

Filming has not started back up again since it was shut down, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. More productions have been starting back up again all over the world. According to reports, Stranger Things season 4 could start filming sometime in September 2020. We have not seen Netflix or anyone with the production confirm that timeline.

We learned from David Harbour that Stranger Things season 4 was originally going to be released in early 2021. We’ve thought a Valentine’s Day season was likely on the way, but now, we’re not so sure when we’ll see the new season.

For now, I guess we can hope the show starts filming in September. I think it will probably be later in the year, but I haven’t heard anything definitive either way.

Before the shutdown, production was scheduled to film in New Mexico as well as Georgia. It’s possible that production could begin in New Mexico sooner than in Georgia because there appears to be so many fewer confirmed cases and less spread in New Mexico than there is in Georgia right now, according to Google’s COVID-19 statistics.

We’ll be sure to let you know more when we find out any information about production restarting.

When is Stranger Things season 4 coming to Netflix?

Most likely scenario: Late 2021 or early 2022

Ultimately, the premiere date will come down to when the show is able to get production started. If they are able to resume production in September, there’s a good chance we’ll see the new season in the late summer or fall of 2021.

Right now, the show is about six months behind in production. Then, there’s going to be another six months of post-production (or more) for a show like this. That puts Stranger Things season 4 on schedule for, at the earliest, a release in the second half of 2021.

Any further delays with production will obviously cause further delays with the release date.

There’s a chance that filming could happen more quickly in an effort to get the season finished. Unlike with past seasons, the season 4 scripts are done. Normally, the Duffer brothers and writers do some re-writes and finish the season as they film. That might still happen, but the bulk of the process is done. Hopefully, that means they can shave a few weeks or so off the production schedule.

While I understand the fans wanting to see the series as soon as possible, the most important thing is getting the season and story right. Rushing the process could cause an inferior product to be released, and I don’t think anyone wants to see that.

At this point, I would be surprised if we saw Stranger Things season 4 on Netflix before the last few months of 2021. I think a Valentine’s Day 2022 release date is also very likely, given that we know the season was supposed to be released around then in 2021.

So, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but don’t expect to see Stranger Things season 4 before the very end of 2021 at the earliest.
