Most depressing Disney movie moments: Carl and Ellie (Up)

Might as well rip the band-aid off right from the start. Up probably had the saddest moment in any Disney movie. What makes it worse is that they hit you with it in the beginning of the movie. They take you through Carl and Ellie’s life, and it’s full of joy and tragedy. What’s inspiring is that no matter how bad things got, they managed to keep smiles on their faces. Nonetheless, you can’t help but notice the catastrophic moments in their lives.

They wanted to have children. They start painting a room for their future child and everything looks grand. Next, there’s a scene where we see that they can’t have kids. Carla and Ellie start saving money for something and accidents keep preventing them from reaching their goal. Then, Ellie gets sick. After time in the hospital, she eventually dies. Carl is left alone in the house that he and his wife built. There wasn’t anyone there to bring his smile back.

The positive:

Later, he comes across a kid named Russel and a dog named Dug. Carl couldn’t stand either of them in the beginning. In the end, he began to love them. Each of them suffered loss and needed someone. While things began grim, they found a way to bring happiness into their lives.
