Best A24 movies on Netflix: 6. Lady Bird

Out of every film on this list, Lady Bird is the biggest overall revelation. We knew Greta Gerwig was a good actress because of her roles in Frances Ha, Greenberg, Mistress America and many other great films, but she burst onto the scene as an incredible writer and director with Lady Bird.

Personally, semi-autobiographical films and stories tend to resonate a little bit deeper with me than others, so this film hits the correct beats. It dives deep into a mother-daughter relationship, which is a complete breath of fresh air. With the movie industry so dominated by men (even though this is now slowly trending in the right direction), a film like this helmed by a woman doesn’t tend to come along often.

Lady Bird is special. The combination of Gerwig’s writing and direction, Saoirse Ronan becoming Gerwig’s muse and A24’s distribution power make it not only one of the best movies the studio has to offer but one of the best movies of the last decade.

Tom Hardy is easily best known for his high profile roles like Venom, The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max: Fury Road, but he’s able to bring something so real to a movie that often goes overlooked.

Locke is a movie about a man alone in his car for an hour and a half talking about a cement pour, but I promise it’s more interesting than it sounds. Hardy’s performance is the only reason this movie works at all because as the titular character of Ivan Locke, his whole world is turned upside down over the course of this one trip in the car.

This movie is one about life, family and always doing the right thing because it is the right thing. It is intriguing and will have you unable to look away from the screen.
