Best A24 movies on Netflix: 4. Swiss Army Man
Swiss Army Man is perhaps the quintessential A24 movie. It is completely absurd, wacky and wild, but it is saying something deep and genuine at its core. Daniel Radcliffe gives his best performance (yes, better than Harry Potter) as a flatulent corpse named Manny who comes to life and saves a hopeless man named Hank (Paul Dano).
What ensues is not only hilarious, but it is heartfelt and special. After a while, you will move past the absurdity of the premise and buy into the friendship between Hank and Manny as Hank explains what it means to be alive. Living life to the fullest is important and both leads learn this during the brisk but enjoyable 90-minute thrill ride.
Best A24 movies on Netflix: 3. Uncut Gems
The aforementioned Adam Sandler-led Safdie brothers feature is easily one of the best films A24 has ever produced. Uncut Gems is a two-plus hour anxiety fest that is somehow eminently watchable. Just like other entries on this list, Sandler gives a career-best performance as Howard Ratner who works in the New York City Diamond District.
Not only is this a great crime thriller, it is also a great sports movie. Howard’s main goal is to get former NBA star Kevin Garnett to buy a rare opal. Garnett, one of the most superstitious basketball players ever, is instantly enamored by the opal, and it begins to affect his performances in playoff games.
Uncut Gems is a masterfully-woven, anxiety-inducing thrill ride that shows Sandler and the Safdies at the height of their powers.
