Odds of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger getting a third season are very unlikely
By Paul Zuniga
There’s been no word on a season renewal for Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger and fans are starting to worry. Will the Freeform series ever be renewed?
Fans of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger were expecting some sort of announcement, either at San Diego Comic-Con or New York Comic Con this year, but nothing was said at the events. Many suspected Freeform and Disney were negotiating over what to do with Cloak and Dagger, though it seems no headway has been made on either front.
There’s also the matter of Jeph Loeb leaving Marvel to consider. Loeb is apparently being replaced by Kevin Feige as he assumes control over Marvel Studios’ creative division. The latter is pertinent here since Loeb was the one who initially announced Cloak and Dagger’s development. He also helmed the project’s first stages before Joe Pokaski was brought in.
Loeb’s departure from Marvel won’t affect the Freeform series’ future directly, but without a driving force like Loeb lobbying for additional episodes, there probably won’t be any. Pokaski obviously sees a future for Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy (Olivia Holt), based on his decision to have them journey into the Runaways’ universe, so there’s good news on that end.

For anyone who hasn’t heard, Cloak and Dagger’s titular stars are confirmed for a crossover with Hulu’s Runaways series later this year, and it could be a sign of them making a permanent move. Mind you, they’re only expected to appear on the Hulu series during one episode.
There is, however, a chance that Hulu and Marvel are concealing the truth from fans. It does make more sense for an extended arc to happen rather than a one-time appearance by Cloak and Dagger. Besides, the time-length of one episode wouldn’t do the aforementioned crossover justice.
An episode of Marvel’s Runaways only lasts about 43 minutes and that limited span of time wouldn’t give Tandy and Tyrone enough time to wrap up their story-arc, especially when they have to share the screen with others too. That being said, a second and third crossover seems inevitable.
While the potential for more crossovers seems likely, we can’t say the same about a third season of Cloak and Dagger. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but with the way things are going, a junior year seems improbable at the moment.
Marvel’s Runaways Season 3 begins streaming on Dec. 13, 2019. Do you think Cloak and Dagger will be renewed for a third season? Let us know in the comments.
