Will Smith to star as Nicky Barnes in Netflix’s upcoming movie, Council
By Verona Jones
Will Smith will star in another Netflix original movie! After starring in Bright, Smith will play Nicky Barnes in Netflix’s Council.
Will Smith will be portraying New York City’s crime boss Nicky Barnes in Netflix’s new movie Council, according to a report from Collider.
Council will rejoin Will Smith with Concussion director Peter Landesman, who will be also writing the screenplay, according to the report.
Landesman’s script tells the story of a crime syndicate consisting of seven African-American men who ruled Harlem in the 1970s and early 1980s, via Collider.
Council focuses on Nicky Barnes, who was known as “Mr. Untouchable” because he was New York City’s largest drug lord, but no one could prove it. Yet, he wasn’t just interested in being a drug lord. Barnes and his six partners had dreams of creating an African-American city-state, where they would rule and police themselves.
Collider is reporting Smith and long-time partner James Lassiter are producing Council with Westbrook Inc.’s Overbrook Entertainment, along with Jackson Pictures’ Matt Jackson and Jason Essex of Anonymous Nobodies.

I’ve watched Smith’s career since he first appeared in his role in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and I have enjoyed most of his movies over the years. There’s something infectious about his personality and how it comes across on screen that makes us continue to watch and love most of his movies.
Even in his long career as an actor, he hasn’t taken on any roles where he portrays a serious bad guy. In fact, Collider’s report states Smith turned down the chance to work with Quentin Tarantino on Django Unchained because Smith was worried about the contoversy surrounding the film.
Smith embraces every role whole-heartedly, but a glimmer of his true personality is revealed in his characters. We see a part of Smith in every role he plays, and I can’t wait to see what Smith will bring to the role of Nicky Barnes.
I’m super excited about this movie, and you should be too if you’re a fan of Smith. Netflix has not announced a release date for the film. Stay tuned for more updates about Council in the near future!
