Disney Plus launches later this year with a slew of content, including the live-action Star Wars show, The Mandalorian. Showrunner Jon Favreau recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the future of the show.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jon Favreau opened up about his Disney Plus show, The Mandalorian. It hasn’t premiered yet, and the streaming service hasn’t launched, but there is no question that this program will run for as long as they want it to last.

The recent pricing of Disney Plus was an act of war to current and future streaming rivals that will attempt to compete with Disney. The Star Wars content will feature new seasons of The Clone Wars and of course house all of its previous film and television entries.

In the interview, Favreau mentioned that he will likely take the directors chair in the second season for an episode, which means the second season is already in the works. Here’s what he told EW:

"“We’re working on season 2, writing, prepping with the directors and getting ready to direct myself, actually.”"

He was unable to direct the first season as he was working on The Lion King in this year’s remake. However, that leads us to believe the show is receiving a second season if they are already working on it two months before the series premiere.

The Star Wars canon is a tricky collection since the previous owner George Lucas sold the rights to Disney. After their historic purchase, they decided to clean up the canonical clutter with the huge Expanded Universe. They basically cut everything that wasn’t the episodic films and The Clone Wars.

Then, Disney began creating more content for their new canon and incorporated elements of the non-canon stories. One of those major characters made non-canon, or Star Wars Legends, was Thrawn. Written by Timothy Zahn, the Thrawn series takes a closer look into the master Imperial Strategist fighting for the Empire.

Additionally, Favreau mentioned that he would be open to including Mara Jade, who super fans know as the smuggler who eventually marries Luke Skywalker. This history may need to be adjusted slightly, but her base character can still be introduced and maybe even find her way onto the big screen.

Much of The Mandalorian has been kept under wraps but the small bits of teasers and trailers we’ve seen generate great amounts of hype and curiosity among fans. Favreau understands how to handle IP, Intellectual Property, with his two major remakes The Lion King and The Jungle Book added to his extensive involvement with the MCU, Favreau directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

When the series premieres on Nov. 12, much of these questions might be answered and we should have a bearing on how involved this show gets into the Star Wars lore. For now, though, we’ll have to settle for what we know, and wait for Disney Plus to open up shop.
