The Netflix original series The Spy starring Sacha Baron Cohen is a must-watch on Netflix if you like thrillers! Possible spoilers below.

Produced by Alain Goldman’s Paris-based company, Legende, and starring Borat’s Sacha Baron Cohen, Netflix’s The Spy is a dark and edgy series. There is no other way to describe it, and it’s that edge that draws you in as a viewer.

The Netflix original series The Spy is a limited six-episode miniseries about Eli Cohen and his role as an Israeli spy during the rising Israeli-Syrian tensions from 1960-1967.

The first episode opens with glimpses into Eli’s normal daily life in Israel. He’s very happily married to Nadia and has a loving family, but he wants more. He wants to help his fledgling country firmly establish itself as a nation, and he had applied to Israel’s Mossad to do his part making that dream come true. Mossad is their national intelligence agency, and they had denied his application twice.

It is when he is finally accepted into the Mossad that the series takes on it’s darker undertones. The next five-episodes are split between Eli’s dangerous life in Syria and a window into how Nadia is surviving each day as a single parent with Eli being gone. This perspective provides a rare insight into the life of an intelligence agent and how the need to help their country affects their loved ones.

When you think of “spies” in TV and movies, one cannot help but think of James Bond with his fancy cars and his gorgeous women. His jet-setting around to glamorous sites all the while outsmarting the bad guy, all in the name of God and country.

Except, the reality is so much different, and that’s where The Spy lives. Spouses are single parents raising their children mostly alone and they are kept in the dark about where and what their husbands are doing. Separated by secrets and lies from a government that has to juggle the needs of the country between the needs of a single family. Decisions that have to be made, but are still agonizing to make.

Cohen did an amazing job bringing Eli’s personality to life and The Spy is worth watching because it provides a more realistic idea of how intelligence agents really live. The series provides a rare insight to these shadowy people’s lives that the public very rarely gets to see let alone know about providing a provocative glimpse into what a real spy is.

The first season of the series is now streaming on Netflix. Watch all six episodes now!
