Netflix is making a new animated He-Man series, Masters of the Universe, with Kevin Smith as the showrunner! Smith announced the new at Power-Con 2019.

Masters of the Universe fans received some exciting news today during the annual Power-Con event held in Anaheim, CA. Kevin Smith announced during his panel on Sunday afternoon that he will be the showrunner and executive producer for the upcoming animated Masters of the Universe limited series for Netflix, according to a report from Variety.

While that news alone is enough to get He-Man fans excited, Smith also revealed that his series would not be a reboot like She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Instead, Masters of the Universe: Revelation will be a continuation of the original 1980s series.

I don’t know how exactly that will work, but it will be really interesting to see how Smith can put his twist on the story.

Here’s what Smith said about the opportunity to develop this series, via Variety:

"“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull but also their entire Universe.”"

For those who are unfamiliar, the original He-Man and The Masters of the Universe series aired from 1983 to 1985. The series produced 130 episodes, launched a spin-off of series She-Ra: Princess of Power, one theatrical feature He-Man, and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword, and one live-action feature film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man.

The He-Man storyline continued through 1989 with the poorly received The New Adventures of He-Man. Cartoon Network also rebooted the series in 2002 with the critical and fan-favorite He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

With the final original series episode, “The Cold Zone,” focusing entirely on Kobra Khan recruiting He-Man to help save The Reptons and with Smith mentioning that his continuation will pick up where the original series storylines ended, it is unclear at this time precisely what storylines he will be expanding upon in the new series. I’m guessing it will tie in this story, though.

Mattel’s Vice President, Rob David, will also executive produce the series. David is no stranger to the He-Man universe, as he authored He-Man: The Eternity War for DC comics in 2015, according to the Variety report.

Today’s announcement raises plenty of questions that fans have time to speculate and debate. The Masters of the Universe: Revelation limited series probably won’t be released until 2021. It’s a little late in 2019 to expect to see the series next year, but it’s possible. Continue to check back here for more information as it becomes available.
