Emmys 2019: Why Stranger Things 3 wasn’t nominated

The 71st Emmy Awards have announced all the nominees up for awards this year! But some fans couldn’t help but notice the absence of one Netflix series in particular.

Did you tune in live to catch the nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards? Whether you did or caught up later, you are now aware about how Netflix scored over 100 nominations. Yeah, this is why Netflix is our favorite streaming service. By far. But wait — where is Stranger Things?

Stranger Things 3 is the strongest season in the series, clearly it is deserving of some Emmy love, right? Definitely! However, there are rules the Emmys (and all other award ceremonies) must follow. We’ve got all the details for you, below.

There is always a cut-off date in order to be eligible. For the 71st Emmy Awards, that date is May 31, 2019. This means any series that premiered after May 31 of this year is not eligible. Stranger Things 3 blessed the streaming network on July 4, so about a week too late.

Don’t worry, though! Stranger Things 3 is eligible next year, so we’ll be sure to root for it come the 72nd Emmy Awards! In the meantime, Netflix and fans have a lot of other shows to cheer for.

A few of their most notable 117 nominations include:

Russian Doll, which is currently working on its second season, scored 13 Emmy noms, including Outstanding Lead Actress for Natasha Lyonne. She’ll be going up against Christina Applegate for Dead to Me, another amazing Netflix series.

When They See Us captured a lot of attention from critics and fans, and with a premiere date of May 31, it barely made the cut, too! The limited series tallied 16 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series, two for Best Actress in a Limited Series (Niecy Nash and Aunjanue Ellis), as well as several more.
