Canceled: Daybreak

Canceled: After season 1

What it’s about: Daybreak is set in a post-apocalyptic world where only teenagers have survived. We see how the teens have survived, which unsurprisingly is through the cliques they had during high school.

For some, the apocalypse is the worst thing ever to happen. For others, it’s the best.

The series mostly follows Josh and his friends in a war between tribes. However, the series focuses on individuals, allowing everyone to tell their story. It also turns out that a couple of adults did survive and that there is a big reason for some teens to survive and others/adults not to have done.

Why it was canceled: Netflix didn’t outrightly state why the series was canceled. However, there’s one reason a show would be canceled after one season. It’s usually all about the viewership.

While the show likely gained a lot of viewers for the first episode or two, that viewership may not have lasted until the end of the season. If there’s a large drop off towards the end, Netflix chooses to cancel because it knows there will be a bigger drop off at the start of the second season.

It’s certainly a sad cancellation. Daybreak is one of the best shows of the decade, offering diversity, inclusivity, and plenty of lessons for us all to learn. We don’t get to say who other people are or force them to fit our molds!
