In danger: 13 Reasons Why

What it’s about: 13 Reasons Why was originally based on the Jay Asher novel of the same name, telling the story of Hannah Baker after she killed herself. It was told through 13 tapes that were directed at 13 different people, those who contributed in some way to her death.

The series has certainly grown from that point. The second season picked up with how the students dealt with the tapes being out and the knowledge that they’d contributed. It focused on the grieving process, as well as how various other lives would change from rape allegations and actions.

Why it’s in danger: This is going to be all about the ratings. There were a lot of complaints about the first two seasons. However, I’ll admit that the third season needed to happen to offer Tyler’s storyline a chance to play out after that horrific ending in the second season.

However, the third season may be as far as it goes. There was little buildup to the point that the second season got to. It was out-there in terms of drama, possibly written in purely for the shock value. There’s only so many times a show can get away with this.

Parents, teachers, and others are advocating for the show to be canceled. If they get their way and prevent their family members watching, it could lead to the end.

Chances of being renewed: This was on my previous list of Netflix Originals in danger of cancellation this year and it’s still one that I’d be worried about as a fan. 13 Reasons Why is shrouded in controversy right now. While it has been renewed for a third season, the controversy surrounding storylines this year may be too much.

It will all depend on the viewers though. We don’t get to know Netflix’s unless the streaming service chooses to release them, so you never know. I remain on the fence.
