10 shows in danger of cancellation and 5 Netflix should save
In danger: The Gifted
Number of seasons: 2
What it’s about: The Gifted tells the story of some of the lesser-known heroes and villains in the X-Men universe (especially for the non-comic fans). It all starts with a family learning that two of their children have the X gene and now they’re wanted by the authorities. They soon find their way into the Mutant Underground, and suddenly, they’re unwillingly pulled into a fight between mutants and humans.
Why it’s in danger: I said it as soon as FOX announced it’s lineup for the 2018-2019 season that it put The Gifted in the firing line. Putting it on at 8/7c on Tuesdays was a bad move. And it proved to be the case. The ratings were already on the low side in the first season but they dipped further in the second.
Even the switch with Lethal Weapon (another show in serious danger) didn’t help enough. People aren’t tuning in live and this puts the potential money from the advertisers at risk.
The Gifted wrapped its second season without a renewal confirmation on Feb. 26. Despite the cliffhanger, the show is likely to be canceled. FOX has proven before (with Lucifer) that it doesn’t renewed just because of a cliffhanger.
Chances of being renewed: Renewal chances are extremely slim. They’re so slim that even the showrunner has hinted that The Gifted is going to be canceled. I also don’t think that if it was canceled that it would be saved by another network, unless maybe Hulu of all streaming services wants to step in.
The Gifted isn’t streaming on Netflix U.S. and wouldn’t likely be a show it looks to save. However, it probably should if it is canceled.
