Why are Netflix Music Documentaries on the rise?

Recent times have seen a spate of documentaries focused on music and musicians pour onto streaming platforms globally. The rise raises a simple question: why are they so popular?

Netflix is one of the biggest streaming platforms on the market. Its popularity comes from merging content from various genres in one place under a chosen fee. As the company broadens its range of media, music documentaries seem to be becoming more prevalent.

The rise of the music documentary is prevalent. We are loving seeing some of our favorite musical icons featured heavily in series on the platform. Not only do these give passive viewers insights into the musicians, but for fans and active viewers, they offer a chance to relive the nostalgia and magic of their icons. Plus, music really is the universal language.

There are some really incredible series already available to stream, and I am sure there are many more on the way. But here are a few that are must-watches for anyone with access to Netflix. Plus. What makes them so good?

Netflix music documentaries you must stream

Although at the heart of it, music documentaries are about the emotions the sound invokes in us - some go further and deeper with our emotions. In 2024, I’m Tim was released and focused on the life of the late great DJ, Avicii. Going right back to the start of his life, the documentary focuses on Tim as a child and teenager in Sweden, experimenting with music before his career skyrocketed into selling out some of the biggest festivals. Even if Electronic Dance Music (EDM) isn’t for you, this one really pulls at the heartstrings, and you cannot help but feel a connection to his musical genius. And if you are a fan like me, it is a truly captivating watch.

Most recently, Kylie dropped in 2026, and as you can guess, it is centered around the Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue. This three-parter highlights the highs and the lows of being in the music industry as a female. Minogue faced a lot of adversity from personal challenges with her health and well-being but also, by no fault of her own, through the criticism of the press. This shares some of her most popular interviews and never-before-seen home movies to draw attention and a whole lot of catchy pop!

Heading back to 2024 now, The Greatest Night in Pop dropped and united fans of tons of artists together. It is a powerful thing to have a ton of artists from different backgrounds unite on one song. This captures the night in 1985 when the charity single “We Are the World” was recorded. While this features some of the greats such as Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few, the main story is narrated by Lionel Richie, who had a pivotal role in the single. Igniting the audience's curiosity about the origins of the song creates a sense of intrigue that automatically captures attention and attracts viewers to the show.

Wake me up before you go go, the colorful pop duo Wham! had a 2023 self-titled mini factual series that had the same production company as the more recent “Kylie.” The story of George Michael will forever be deeply moving to many with stories of his charity work, roots, and struggles alongside his best friend, Andrew Ridgeley. They transformed from best friends to international sensations at a rapid pace and captured the hearts of many 80s teens and still retain strong fan bases today. Although Michael is sadly no longer with us, watching series like this one still makes him very much alive in our memories.

Another of Netflix's successful hits was the high-energy 2026 three-parter Take That. The (then) 90s five-piece, Manchester-formed boyband began working in small clubs and pubs that were completely contracted by where they would end up and still play today - in stadiums across the globe. There is a lot to take from this one, but there is a very strong message of forgiveness between members and understanding that came to them in later life. Their fans have remained just as solid as they did when they broke into the industry, and this was a hit thanks to them.

It is hard to say just how many there are out there: Gaga, Grande, Elvis, Dylan, and more all have their own stories told in unique ways. But what unites them all? The fascination we have with the people behind the soundtracks of our lives. As long as we keep listening, we will keep having stunning series like these grace our screens more and more.
