As much as we all love having the accessibility of our favorite shows on Netflix, the inevitable drawback always rests in the back of our minds. You can never guarantee that each show that the streaming service acquires will be available for an extended period of time. Eventually, most shows leave the platform, and that time comes long before you're ready to part ways.
Unfortunately, this year will see a number of major shows possibly being pulled from Netflix before 2027 begins. The likes of Gossip Girl, Scandal, Fear the Walking Dead, and Shameless are rumored to be among the titles on the chopping block barring any last-minute licensing renewals. Sadly, one of the most beloved television sitcoms of all time could also be removed this fall.
Seinfeld reportedly leaving Netflix in October 2026
According What's on Netflix's reporting, it's looking likely that Seinfeld will be removed from Netflix in the United States on Oct. 1, 2026. All nine seasons of the iconic sitcom would be yanked from the platform and in search of a new streaming home. While the news of the show's removal seem sudden and unfortunate, the writing had always been on the wall for this particular title.
Netflix nabbed the streaming rights to Seinfeld for a whopping $500 million back in September 2019 for a deal that was reported to last for five years. The series was added to the streamer in October 2021, which would bring its five-year tenure on Netflix to an end in October 2026. Naturally, this gives the Sony title and Netflix an easy out to part ways if a renewal deal isn't reached.
While Seinfeld had initial success upon dropping on Netflix, it hasn't quite had the same lasting impact that comedies like Friends and The Office previously had on Netflix and continue to have on their respective exclusive streaming homes HBO Max and Peacock. But the sitcom has been enough of a draw for Netflix to pay up a half-billion payday to bring the series to fans.
But will Netflix want to foot another sizable bill to keep Seinfeld on its platform exclusively? That's the half-billion dollar question that we will have to monitor until an answer arrives. If Netflix doesn't pursue a license renewal deal with Sony sometime soon, then Seinfeld will in fact leave the streamer on Oct. 1 and be in search of another streamer. However, which streamer will try to stake its claim?
After Seinfeld's deal with Hulu ending, Netflix outbid every other streamer (literally all of them—Prime Video, Peacock, Paramount+, HBO Max, and Hulu), but if the show leaves Netflix, it will be an even playing field again. Hulu/Disney+ or HBO Max seem like the best fit for the iconic comedy, and one that's this valuable, both culturally and commercially, though we'll have to wait and see.
The last thing Seinfeld fans want is to lose easy streaming access to the show. Thankfully, the sitcom has been released on and remained available on physical media and hasn't left the airwaves in syndication. There's always a way to catch up with Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer. But where will the show stream? Hopefully, we'll find out before the October 2026 deadline.
