Warning: This post contains spoilers from Outer Banks season 5 from this point forward.

The Pogues have returned for their final adventure, and this might be their most dangerous adventure yet. Between their revenge mission to settle the score fo JJ's death and steal back the Blue Crown and John B's unfortunate mistake that sets off another series of wild events, Outer Banks season 5 is full of action and surprises from start to finish just as fans had hoped.

What's the mistake that John B made? Well, once the Pogues are tossed back home to Kildare after getting locked up in Dubrovnik, John B and Sarah are homeless, bankrupt, and completely desperate. John B continues to slowly but surely make money by catching and selling crabs, but while on the water, he happens upon a massive bale of marijuana floating near his boat.

Naturally, John B decides to steal the bale with the intention of selling it for a huge score to get out of dire straits. To his surprise, the drug dealers who lost the bale from their own boat caught him stealing the drugs. After teaming with Rafe and Barry to sell the weed, John B gets confronted by Julio, now on the hook for $70K or Sarah will turn out like Ben Rhodes. But who is Ben Rhodes?

Ben Rhodes is a cautionary tale in Outer Banks season 5

Don't worry, you didn't forget a whole character that appeared in a previous season. Ben Rhodes has never been seen in Outer Banks, but he was mentioned multiple times throughout season 5 as a cautionary tale. Julio threatens John B to repay him or Sarah would have the same fate as Ben Rhodes, who had found himself in a similar situation to John B and died as a result.

Everyone in town knows what happened to Ben Rhodes and lives in fear of the same thing happening to them. Rafe reveals the lore behind Ben Rhodes in season 5 episode 3. Ben also food a package of drugs, and after that, "just, poof, gone," as Rafe eloquently explains. As legend has it, Ben was tied to a hooked marlin and was thrown overboard his boat, "bobbing and weaving" to his death.

No one can really know for sure what happened to Ben Rhodes after getting caught up with Julio's crowd, but what everyone can agree on was that what happened to him wasn't good. That's why when everyone learns the truth about what John B did with the bale of weed he stole from the water, he's reminded about the fate of Ben Rhodes, which is waiting for Sarah.

Julio gives John B a time limit to pay him back the $70K, which he doesn't have because he and Rafe made a deal for $25K with Barry. John B's forced to rob Topper's father's safe, but that also doesn't work out to get the money back. Sarah ends up coming up with a plan to team up with Shoupe to take down Julio, who gets arrested... but his men still go after John B and Sarah.

Luckily, Sarah doesn't get killed like Ben Rhodes, so the cautionary tale never actually comes to fruition. When Julio's two men follow them to New Orleans to visit Sarah's mom, the Corsairs kill both drug dealers, saving John B and Sarah but stealing the scytale in the process (that's a whole other story). For once, they got extremely lucky that multiple people were hunting them down.
