Virgin River season 7 made its premiere on Netflix on March 12, and there's so much to talk about following the season's unexpected events. From deaths to births to life-threatening accidents to confirmed character exits, fans will be unpacking these 10 episodes for the foreseeable future. Of course, that also includes the second tease of the proposal prequel spinoff series.

Netflix first announced that a Virgin River prequel series was in development and would follow the love story of Mel's mother Sarah and her birth father Everett. Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr were ultimately cast in the roles and made their first appearance in season 6 during a flashback episode that otherwise acted as something of a backdoor pilot. Rothe and Kerr appear again in season 7.

However, after the release of Virgin River season 6 (and now 7), Netflix hasn't provided any further updates on the status of the proposed prequel spinoff, which also means that it hasn't been properly picked up to series. While it's still seemingly up in the air, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith just provided the latest update on the Sarah and Everett prequel, and fans can continue to be hopeful.

As Smith confirmed to Deadline, "It’s still in development." Honestly, that's great news for fans since neither Netflix nor the creative team are rushing on the prequel just to simply get it out as quickly as possible. Deadline reports that a first pass at the prequel "didn't pan out," which sent Smith back to the drawing board to move forward and come up with new ideas.

The prequel spinoff doesn't appear to be top priority for Smith and Netflix, at least not for right now, as Smith places much of his focus on Virgin River season 8. Deadline suggests that production will kick off on season 8 "next month," meaning April 2026. Being so, it's unlikely that we will receive another major update on the prequel spinoff before filming starts on the next season.

Rothe and Kerr reprise their roles in Virgin River season 7 as Sarah and Everett in the 1970s, and this time, Sarah is pregnant with Mel. They have a heartbreaking conversation regarding their relationship, with Sarah telling him that she must remain committed to her husband because that's what she believes will be best for Joey and her new daughter, who again is Mel.

Everett respects Sarah's decision, and that's ultimately what we know plays out for Mel's family based on what we have learned through flashbacks and officially meeting Everett in present day last season. The flashback to the 1970s in season 7 helps provide perspective to Mel regarding her own complicated choices in parenthood with her and Jack possibly adopting Marley and Eamon's baby.

Smith explained to Deadline what his intention was with Sarah and Everett's flashback in season 7 and whether the flashbacks could continue in season 8 and beyond: "I think if it’s appropriate. This felt like an opportunity for Everett to impart how difficult it was for him to give her up. It spoke to Mel’s story about Marley organically, so there was nothing more to it than having Everett be able to connect with Mel on something very personal."

It's unclear what the new ideas for the prequel series would be, mostly because it seems the season 6 and season 7 flashbacks to Sarah and Everett have covered a lot of the big moments in their story. Virgin River season 7 also introduced a younger version of Doc and Hope during a scene in which Doc has a memory to the past while walking through a maze.

If there's a demand from fans to expand the world of Virgin River, there's no doubt that Netflix will find a way to make a spinoff series work, whether it's the prequel that was originally planned or a completely different take on the world's expansion. Thankfully, fans can be assured that something's still in the works even if nothing's official yet. We'll keep fans updated with the latest news!
