When it comes to page-to-screen adaptations, Netflix isn't a stranger to bringing our favorite stories to life. Some of the streamer's most popular content comes from the pages of best-selling books, like the recent hits The Perfect Couple, Damsel, Uglies, and The Lincoln Lawyer. Of course, there are countless other Netflix movies and shows based on books and plenty more to come.

Whether it's popular romance novels from BookTok darling Emily Henry or various thriller hits soon to become your next limited series obsession, your book shelves and Netflix watch list will continue to runneth over. Most recently, Netflix put two completely different but equally exciting adaptations of Pride & Prejudice into development, and one has a special YA twist.

Pride & Prejudice show and movie in works at Netflix

On Oct. 11, news broke that Netflix was developing a new series based on Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. While the series has yet to be officially greenlit, it's been said that Dolly Alderton will write the scripts for the prospective series. Because the show isn't official quite yet, there are no cast members attached to the project, though it would be sure to attract big names for Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

If the series moves ahead and gets an official order, Pride & Prejudice will become the second Netflix original adaptation of an Austen novel. The streamer previously adapted her book Persuasion into a film starring Dakota Johnson in 2022. Unfortunately, the movie earned most negative reception from critics, but if at first you don't succeed, try again with the most popular Austen title.

In addition to the straightforward, direct series adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, Netflix has also place into a development a film adaptation of the modern retelling novel Pride. The book released in 2018 comes from author Ibi Zoboi takes place in Brooklyn, New York as an Afro-Latina teenager navigates cultural and familial issues while falling for the arrogant boy next door.

Pride will be produced by the book's company Alloy Entertainment as well as President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama's production company Higher Ground. The Bear writer Karen Joseph Adcock is the writer behind the film adaptation. Those are some big names attached to the in-the-works movie that's definitely a shoo-in for the green light and global success.

Both projects are still in the early days of development, but the possibility of two Pride & Prejudice adaptations coming to Netflix should be music to Austen fans' ears. Fingers crossed both the modern retelling movie and the direct series adaptation come to fruition and hit our screens sooner rather than later. For now, make your dream castings: Who do you want to see take the leading roles?
