As Hilary Duff once said, let's go back, back to the beginning. And in Netflix's new horror movie Time Cut, that's exactly what Lucy does. Outer Banks star Madison Bailey leads the movie as Lucy, a teenager who travels back in time from 2024 to 2003 and must save her sister from being the next victim of the Sweetly Slasher serial killer.

Being a period piece (who else shuddered at the thought of movie taking place in 2003 being a period piece?), Time Cut features a number of throwback songs from the early 2000s, including a signature and iconic cut from the aforementioned pop icon Hilary Duff. If you think these early aughts songs are "so yesterday," think again!

Whether you're a teenager like Lucy or a millennial looking for a little nostalgic blast from the past, you will be entertained by the twists and turns and chills and thrills. But you will most especially become obsessed with the soundtrack. Wondering what some of the needle drops are? Can't remember the title of that one song? Here are all the songs featured in the movie!

Time Cut soundtrack

In the opening sequence of the movie, Summer (Antonia Gentry) attends a party where Fat Joe and Ashanti's hit collaboration "What's Luv?" and The Coup's "Pork and Beef" plays for the dancing crowd. If you weren't a child or teen of the '90s, then you probably don't know that you couldn't turn on the radio in 2002 without hearing "What's Luv?" at least a handful of times a day.

On top of those two throwbacks, Vanessa Carlton's inescapable hit single "A Thousand Miles" makes an appearance in a pivotal scene when Lucy pokes around Summer's bedroom. After she finds herself transported to 2003, she goes to her school and, to the tune of "So Yesterday" by Hilary Duff, sees students skating on Heelys, listening to portable CD players and MP3 players, and talking on flip phones. Yes, that's what life was like!

Here's the full list of songs heard throughout the movie:

  • "What's Luv?" by Fat Joe feat. Ashanti
  • "Pork and Beef" by The Coup
  • "Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl" by Olivia Rodrigo
  • "A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton
  • "Ain't Got You" by Kevin Qian
  • "So Yesterday" by Hilary Duff
  • "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus
  • "Coming Home" by Emma Jayne
  • "Get Poppin" by PMG
  • "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne
  • "All You Wanted" by Michelle Branch

Time Cut includes at least three more iconic songs millennials will be singing along to, including "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus (for the teens: the song that went viral on TikTok last year), "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne, and the end credits song "All You Wanted" by Michelle Branch. As for those last two pop-rock hits, nothing could be more emblematic of the early 2000s music scene.

But it's not all throwbacks in the 2003-set movie. In the 2024 scene that introduces Lucy, the reigning princess of the 2020s pop-rock moment Olivia Rodrigo adds her 2000s-influenced touch. The star's Grammy-nominated song "Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl" makes the perfect introduction to Lucy's character and is an excellent choice for a movie that takes place in both the 2000s and 2020s.
